Hyundai Kona Electric Malaysia launch confirmed, few details revealed
KUALA LUMPUR: Hyundai Kona Electric is scheduled for its Malaysian debut in November, the news is confirmed by Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors. It will be Hyundai Malaysia's first all-electric offering and so it deserves all the hype.

Hyundai Kona Electric is a good car. With a driving range of 484 km being one of the longest in its class.Mr Low Yuan Lung, Managing Director of HSDM said, “With the newly announced import and excise duty exemptions, we envisage greater interest in EVs in Malaysia. The arrival of the Kona Electric is timely as it will provide more choice for consumers who want a more sustainable and greener ride option to help reduce carbon footprint.” On the performance part of it, he said, “The Kona Electric offers outstanding electric performance in terms of battery range and top speed. It also features fast charging which makes it perfect for long-distance drives.”
Speaking of performance, the new Malaysia-spec Kona Electric will be offered in two zero-emissions battery-electric units - a long-range and a basic version. The former includes a 64 kWh battery offering a maximum range of 484 km, while the latter gets a 39.2 kWh with a range of 305 km. Both the battery variants (64 kWh and 39.2 kWh) come paired with an e-motor that delivers a maximum power of 204 PS along with a peak torque of 395 Nm. This setup helps the Hyundai first electric in Malaysia to complete the century sprint in 7.9 seconds.
What about charging? The lithium-ion polymer battery goes from 10 to 80 percent charge in just 47 minutes via a 100kW direct current (DC) fast charger. The car also features an optional 11 kW three three-phase onboard charger; it allows for ‘significantly shorter charging times’ via a private compatible wall box at home or a public three-phase AC charging station. The car can also be charged via a compatible regular household power socket using the in-cable control box.
