KUALA LUMPUR: With prestigious awards such as 'New Car of the Year', 'Saloon of the Year', and 'Best in Class' already under its belt, Hyundai's electrified streamliner, the Ioniq 6, has now earned the titles of '2023 World Car of the Year', '2023 World Electric Vehicle of the Year', and '2023 World Car Design of the Year' at the World Car Awards held at the New York International Auto Show yesterday. This marks a triple win for the South Korean automaker.

The 2023 World Car Awards ceremony recently held at the New York International Auto Show named the Hyundai Ioniq 6 as the ‘2023 World Car of the Year’. The EV also grabbed two other titles - ‘2023 World Electric Vehicle of the Year' and '2023 World Car Design of the Year.'
  • Who were all in the jury panel for the 2023 World Car Awards?

The jury panel for the 2023 World Car Awards included 100 automotive journalists from 32 countries.
  • “We are thrilled to receive this prestigious honour two years in a row, which recognizes the tremendous talents and unrelenting efforts of everyone at Hyundai Motor Company to bring EVs like IONIQ 6 to market,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company.

“This honour reinforces our commitment to be a global leader in vehicle electrification and will serve to embolden our efforts as a smart mobility solutions provider,” he added.

“We always want to connect with customers on an emotional level and with the design of the IONIQ 6 we have created truly one of a kind. The daring streamliner styling combines strong emotional appeal with aerodynamic efficiency to give exceptional range,” said SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Global Design Center. “Inside, we set-out to create a personal studio which offers mindful space and calm functionality which, we believe, elevates EV design.”

The Ioniq 6 was selected as the winner by a panel of 100 judges (automotive journalists) from 32 countries. The jury had to choose from the top three finalists, all of which were launched in 2022.

The executive vice president and head of Hyundai and Genesis Global Design Center, SangYup Lee, also received the honour of “2023 World Car Person of the Year” for his vital contribution to the cars introduced last year, including the Ioniq 6, new Kona and the N Vision 74 rolling lab.

A brief look at the Hyundai Ioniq 6 specifications

The Ioniq 6 is the second model of the brand’s dedicated all-electric lineup called IONIQ. It underpins an Electric-Global Modular Platform architecture and is touted as one of the most aerodynamic and energy-efficient electric vehicles on the market.

The EV takes energy from either an RWD single-motor or an AWD dual-motor. Battery capacities range from 53-kWh to 77.4-kWh offering a WLTP-rated range of up to 614 km. Also part of the setup is an 800-V, ultra-fast charging system that provides 10 to 80% charge in just 18 minutes when using a 350 kW DC charger.

Other standout highlights of the EV include a spacious and ergonomic interior, Vehicle-to-Load tech, driver assistance systems, advanced connectivity with over-the-air (OTA) software updates, dual-colour ambient lighting, speed sync lighting, EV Performance Tune-up, and Electric Active Sound Design.
