Hyundai Ioniq 5 to get significant updates for 2023

KUALA LUMPUR: Under its electric cars-focused Ioniq sub-brand, Hyundai unveiled the Ioniq 5 as the first model based on the Hyundai Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) back in Feb 2021. Well, now a year later, this battery-electric compact crossover SUV is ready to get some significant updates.

Destined for the European market, the all-new 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 will get a bigger 77.4-kWh battery pack with longer-range capabilities, which is already available in the US market and delivers a range of 488 km on a single charge. Currently, the automaker offers a 58-kWh battery pack in the Old Continent.

Joining the bigger battery pack is a new battery conditioning feature. It works when the EV is on the move and helps in faster charging. The system enables the vehicle to automatically adapt the battery temperature and works along with the navigation system to find the nearest charging station when required. It would be of great help for the customers living in colder climates.

Besides changes related to the battery, the EV will get more advanced technology systems. The first on this list is a video-based digital interior mirror which according to the company will provide better rear visibility with a panoramic rear-facing view. It is mated to a camera positioned just below the EV’s rear spoiler.

Hyundai will also kit the Europe-spec Ioniq EV with digital side mirrors to reduce air resistance for better efficiency. These are also said to provide a clearer view even in bad weather.

Further, the automaker will add a Smart Frequency Dampers function to the Ioniq specs sheet to improve the ride quality. It will “improve the response of front and rear axle suspensions to increase ride comfort,” says Hyundai.

If we talk about the looks, the Europe-spec 2023 Ioniq 5 will look distinct with non-painted black bumpers and black trims.

The updated EV is expected to hit the European market in the second half of 2022.
