Hyundai IONIQ 5 set to launch in Malaysia this month, bookings open
KUALA LUMPUR: After the success of the Kona Electric, Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors is ready to introduce its next electric vehicle, the IONIQ 5, in the local market this month.

Based on Hyundai’s dedicated BEV architecture - the Electric-Global Modular Platform, the IONIQ 5 comes with unique proportions on an elongated wheelbase. Design-wise, it benefits from the brand’s first clamshell hood that lessens panel gaps for optimal aerodynamics. The unique V-shaped bumper incorporating distinctive DRLs also catches our attention.
The pixel-inspired squared-off LED headlights, pixelated tail lights, pop-out door handles, and aero-optimized 20-inch wheels are among the other exterior highlights of the upcoming Hyundai IONIQ 5.
To fit the mobility needs of different customers, the IONIQ 5 comes with a range of power electric configurations with two battery pack options - 58 kWh and72.6 kWh. Either of which can be selected with a rear motor only or with both front and rear motors. In terms of performance, all the versions provide outstanding range along with a top speed of 185 kmph, says Hyundai.
According to Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director, Retail and Distribution of Sime Darby Motors Malaysia, Hyundai is expected to lead the EV market segment in the country as it would be rolling out many more EVs over the next three years.
“The Kona Electric introduced last year was a resounding success with the first batch of vehicles sold out. We expect demand for the IONIQ 5 to surpass the demand for the Kona Electric. Given how well-received Hyundai-brand electric vehicles are here, we have lined up more electric models for our discerning customers,” Jeffrey added.
“The IONIQ 5 is the benchmark in redefining the electric mobility lifestyle with sustainable and innovative features," said Mr. Low Yuan Lung, Managing Director of HSDM.
“It offers an innovative interior design with eco-friendly materials, strong performance mated with ultra-fast charging, and a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function. Coupled with advanced connectivity and driver assistance features, the IONIQ 5 offers drivers the ultimate in-car experience while ensuring safety,” he added.
