Hyundai commences construction of battery plant in Indonesia; approx. investment of RM 279 million

KUALA LUMPUR: A new Hyundai battery plant is currently under construction in Indonesia, thus making the country ASEAN’s EV hub. The automaker intends to establish the country as a “beachhead”, capitalizing on the country’s emergence as a prominent player in the region.

The new plant is located in the Deltamas industrial complex, in Bekasi, West Java (Jawa Barat). And is expected to be completed by the second half of 2024.

Built under collaboration between Hyundai Mobis and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia, the plant is expected to be built with an approximate investment of USD 60 million (RM 279 million).

New Hyundai battery plant: Key details

• The plant will ensure a smooth supply of batteries for Hyundai EVs, thus strengthening the brand’s supply chain
• Production activity will be overseen by Hyundai Energy Indonesia and EV power electric system support will be offered by Hyundai Mobis
• The factory spans over 32,188 square meters and will be built battery systems for Indonesian-made EV models
• The plant will optimize two types of battery cells - standard capacity and large capacity

Also, Hyundai and LG Energy Solution are in a joint venture to build an altogether different battery cell factory in West Java.

The upcoming battery system plant will be located strategically near the brand's assembly plant and the battery cell plant, thus improving supply chain management.
