Hyundai Bayon SUV teaser released; launch expected soon
KUALA LUMPUR: Back in November, Hyundai revealed a few details of its upcoming crossover SUV, the Bayon, which is slated for launch in the European market in the first half of 2021. And now, the Korean automaker started releasing the SUV’s teasers, indicating that the debut of the Bayon is now close.
The newly released teasers partially revealed the front design of the Bayon, which confirmed that the new B-segment SUV will feature Hyundai’s “Sensuous Sportiness” design language. The SUV shares some of the designing cues from the Kona as it sports low-mounted headlamps, high-mounted daytime running lights, and a narrow bonnet just like the Kona.
However, the Bayon’s rear end shows a clear distinction from the rest of Hyundai's lineup, with arrow-shaped tail light clusters connected by a thin red bar and a contrasting black boot lid.
The upcoming Bayon will be the smallest SUV of the brand’s SUV range, positioned beneath the Kona SUV that has recently received a makeover for 2021. Going by its size and position, the Bayon is likely to borrow the mechanical setup and engine lineup from the i20 hatch.
This means Hyundai could offer it with two petrol engine options, including a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged and a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder naturally-aspirated mill. The former produces a total output of 100 bhp and a peak torque of 172 Nm, while the other one is good for 82 bhp and 113 Nm. Transmission choices may include a six-speed manual transmission and a seven-speed DCT.
Once launched, the Bayon would rival against the likes of the Ford Puma and Toyota Yaris Cross in the European market.
“Hyundai has strongly established in the European SUV market already, in terms of our model range as well as our sales success,” says Andreas-Christoph Hofmann, Vice President of Marketing & Product. “By launching a new, additional B-segment model as the entry point into our SUV line-up, we see a great opportunity to cover European customers’ demand even better and to increase our offering in a highly popular segment.”
