Honda will begin producing a new FCEV based on the CR-V in 2024

KUALA LUMPUR: Last year, Honda announced its plan to make only BEVs (battery electric vehicles) and FCEVs (hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles) representing 100% of its global sales by 2040. To help the brand achieve its goal is the upcoming FCEV based on the recently launched CR-V, which is set to enter production in 2024.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Is Honda making a hydrogen-powered CR-V?

Yes, Honda has announced the FCEV version of the recently launched CR-V, which will enter into production in 2024.
  • Will the hydrogen-powered CR-V offer an all-electric drive?

The hydrogen-powered Honda CR-V will have a combination of FCEV technology and plug-in feature enabling the driver to charge the battery for an all-electric drive along with the option of hydrogen refueling.
  • Honda will produce the fuel cell EV at its Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio. It will be a combination of the FCEV technology and plug-in feature enabling the driver to charge the battery pack for an all-electric drive in the nearby areas along with the option of fast hydrogen refueling for longer trips.

“Honda established our goal to realize carbon neutrality by 2050 and the complete electrification of our vehicle lineup by 2040 is critical to achieving it,” said Gary Robinson, vice president of Auto Planning & Strategy for American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “As we accelerate our plan to produce Honda battery EVs in the United States, we also will begin low volume production of fuel cell electric vehicles there to further explore their great potential as part of a sustainable transportation future.”

Upon choosing the CR-V as the base for the upcoming FCEV, Honda explains that it is one of America's best-selling Crossover Utility Vehicles in the past quarter century. The 6th generation CR-V sets a new benchmark with its rugged and sophisticated exterior design, sporty and modern interior, increased space, and comfort. That means the automaker will be adding zero emissions tech and EV performance to this mix to leverage its popularity.

The latest CR-V has already been playing a significant role in the brand’s electrification strategy with its hybrid version positioned at the top of the range. The hybrid-electric CR-V is expected to get around 50% of the SUV’s annual sales in the US.

That's all for now. For more details on the all-new FCEV version of the CR-V, stay tuned with us.
