Here’s how the Hyundai Ioniq 5 became 2022 World Car of the Year

2022 will be a year which will be cherished forever by Hyundai, as the brand’s EV, the Ioniq 5 was just named the 2022 World Car of the Year at the ongoing New York International Motor Show.

Before we dive into what made the Hyundai Ioniq 5 win the award, it is worth mentioning that the electric car also won the 2022 World Electric Car of the Year and 2022 World Car Design of the Year awards which means that it is 2022’s best looking car.

The judging for the 2022 World Car of the Year awards was done by a jury comprising 102 experienced automotive journalists from a total of 33 countries around the world, who selected the winners discreetly through a secret ballot held at the New York Motor Show.

The Ioniq 5 was chosen as the winner from a list which comprised a total of 28 finalists. For the World Car Design of the Year award, the Ioniq 5 was voted as the winner by a special panel consisting of six car design experts from around the world.

The Korean EV was chosen due to its unconventional yet visually pleasant design theme. Just look at its lights and wheels and you’ll understand what we’re talking about.

And then we have the World Electric Car of the Year Award in which the Ioniq 5 beat 10 other finalists. From the total, three finalists were shortlisted, from which the Hyundai clinched the title.

This category, which is relatively newer than the other categories in the awards, judges vehicles that are powered solely by one or more electric motors.

The vehicle must also be a model that is mass produced with a minimum volume of 5,000 units per year, and sold in at least two countries at the same time.

Unless you’re living under a coconut shell, you will be well aware of the fact that the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is being sold in Malaysia as well.

The EV is offered in three variants called the Ioniq 5 Lite, Ioniq 5 Plus, and Ioniq 5 Max which are priced at RM199,888, RM229,888, and RM259,888 respectively.

The Ioniq 5, which is also owned by the Sultan of Johor, also comes with a standard two years or 50,000 km warranty as well as an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty for the battery.

Offering better value for money compared to other EVs in the market like the Mercedes-Benz EQA 250 and the Volvo XC40 Recharge Pure Electric, it is no surprise that the Ioniq 5 emerged as the world’s best EV.

Its design which looks as if it is a concept car is also a big winning factor. While many EVs were designed to look dull without any sex appeal, the designers at Hyundai have done a fantastic job in making the Ioniq 5 look very desirable.

On top of being visually appealing, the Ioniq 5 also proves to be a very practical and convenient car to live with, thanks to the spacious and comfortable cabin.

Topped by an impressive driving range of about 400 km, the Ioniq 5 is as complete as an EV can get.
