Say hello to the all-new fully-electric GMC Hummer SUV

KUALA LUMPUR: GMC pulled the wraps off the fully-electric Hummer pickup truck last year, and now here comes part two of the Quiet Revolution, that is the GMC Hummer SUV.  During the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four event, the company unveiled the highly-awaited SUV through an ad narrated by LeBron James. The new model combines the features of the revolutionary HUMMER EV pickup with the benefits of an SUV and thus holds its own supertruck status, says the company.

“The new Hummer EV SUV is the next chapter, offering more options for customers to tailor the truck to their lifestyles, while continuing to encourage them to forge new paths with zero emissions," said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Buick and GMC.

Just like the pickup, the Hummer SUV will be powered by General Motors’ next-gen Ultium battery technology. The most powerful Edition 1 trim will have a setup of three electric motors producing a combined output of 830 horsepower and a peak torque of 15,592 Nm. According to the automaker, the SUV would be able to hit the 100 kmph run in less than 3.5 seconds with the help of the ‘Watts To Freedom’ launch control feature. The estimated cruise range of the SUV is rated at 300 miles, which is quite impressive for an electric vehicle of this size.

The reveal ad shows off the SUV’s capability and its signature features, including CrabWalk and Extract Mode. The former can rotate all four wheels of the SUV at the same angle to move it diagonally at the tight spots when off-roading, while the latter causes the air suspension system to raise it almost 6 inches.

On the exterior, the upcoming Hummer Edition 1 SUV features a rugged front and a new rear design holding a full-size spare tyre. In terms of equipment, it will have 22-inch premium wheels, floor liners, and side steps as standard, however, an Extreme Off-Road Package will also be on offer with 18-inch wheels, 35-inch tyres, rock sliders, underbody armor, a front eLocker, heavy-duty ball-spline half shafts, UltraVision camera for underbody views.

Inside, the Hummer electric SUV boasts a similar five-passenger layout just like the pickup and incorporates a large rear cargo area. The SUV has an Infinity Roof with removable panels, I-Bar, as well as rear drop glass. The available driver-assistance systems will be an enhanced version of Super Cruise offering hands-free driving on more than 2,00,000 miles and a new automatic lane changing feature.

The GMC Hummer EV SUV will hit the roads in early 2023 with a starting price of $105,595 (RM 458,130).
