Ford Ranger vs Rivals: Price, engine, size and features compared

The recently introduced next-gen Ford Ranger is the smartest Ranger ever that is designed and developed with the customer’s inputs in mind. It offers an enhanced user experience with better build and quality and customer-focused connectivity & technology. But, does the new recipe make the Ranger the best pickup truck in the Malaysian market or do its rivals offer a better deal?

Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC) offers the latest Ranger in six versions at a price ranging between RM 108,888 and RM 168,888, which keeps it in competition with other pickup trucks available on the market, including the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Mazda BT-50, Nissan Navara, and Mitsubishi Triton. The new Ranger is the longest, widest and tallest pickup in the segment. It also has the longest wheelbase of 3270 mm and the most spacious cargo bed. However, in terms of ground clearance, the Hilux outperforms its rivals with the most impressive figure of 286 mm. 

As for water wading depth, the Ranger, D-Max and BT-50 offer the same 800 mm depth; well these are just official figures and it is not advisable to take the truck in flooded areas unless it’s an emergency.

In terms of mechanical setup, all the pickup trucks are equipped with four-cylinder turbo diesel engines with the D-Max and BT-50 sharing the same specifications.

Interestingly, the Ranger has the lowest displacement of the bunch i.e. 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel unit, which kicks out the maximum 210 PS and 500 Nm of torque thanks to its bi-turbo formula. The top-spec Hilux utilizing a 2.8-litre mill is very close to the Ford pickup with 204 PS and 500 Nm output levels. At the lowest place lies the Nissan Navara with 163 PS and 403 Nm.

With the above comparison, we conclude that the all-new 2022 Ford Ranger is the most powerful and the best-equipped pickup truck available in the local market. However, one needs to shell out an additional amount of up to RM 20k compared to the lower-priced rivals.
