First-ever electric Rolls-Royce coming in 2023
KUALA LUMPUR: Yes, to hear it just right. After 117-years of existence in the auto industry Rolls-Royce has confirmed the arrival of its first-ever electric car.
Torsten Müller-Ötvös, CEO of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, said, "Today, 117 years later, I am proud to announce that Rolls-Royce is to begin the on-road testing programme for an extraordinary new product that will elevate the global all-electric car revolution and create the first – and finest – super-luxury product of its type. This is not a prototype. It’s the real thing, it will be tested in plain sight and our clients will take first deliveries of the car in the fourth quarter of 2023."
Called Rolls-Royce Spectre will be the brand's first electric car which is scheduled for a Q4 of 2023. This car will be marked as RR's first step in the full EV direction.
Wondering what's with the name Spectre? Well, Rolls-Royce says it is "a name given to otherworldly beings synonymous with great power and apparition; creatures of an alternative realm that make their presence felt through fleeting manifestation. A spectre forces the world to pause. It dominates the space it occupies,”
The RR Spectre EV’s on-road testing will begin soon. The car will endure over 2.5 million km of testing and will be subjected to simulations equivalent to over 400 years of use.
According to Rolls-Royce, the announcement makes the most significant day for the company since 4th May 1904. What happened back then, you ask? Well, on that day the company's founding fathers, Sir Henry Royce and Charles Rolls met for the first time and decided to make the best motor car in the world.
Coming to Rolls-Royce's electric revolution journey didn't begin overnight, but the process started a while back. RR is known to experiment with the electric powertrain from early 2011 with the 102EX, a fully functional electric Phantom. Followed by the 2016 debutant, the 103EX. Not to forget, in 2017 Rolls-Royce revealed the Phantom that was built on a platform that was capable of accommodating different powertrains.
With this announcement, RR has set on the journey to electrifying its lineup fully by 2030. Rest assured guys, the fully electric RR will be as good as the models with ICE.
