Ferrari unveils SF90 Stradale; brand’s first production-spec hybrid model
KUALA LUMPUR: At the Ferrari home circuit, i.e., Pista di Fiorano in Maranello, the automaker unveiled its first production plug-in hybrid car. Called the SF90 Stradale, the hybrid gets its name courtesy to the 90th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari foundation and a long link between car makers road and track cars.
Under the hood, is present a V8 turbocharged engine that is combined to three electric motors. Two of these motors are independent and are located at the front axle, and the third one called the MGUK is positioned at the rear axle, between the gearbox and engine.
According to Michael Leiter, Ferrari Technical Director, the mill is inspired from the familiar F154 mill. However, it showcases a completely new architecture and only shares a few parts from the F154 unit. The said mill displays more capacity from 3,902cc to 3,990cc, thanks to the larger 88 mm bore. Also, the exhaust system and air intake are completely designed.
As for the performance specs, the 3,990cc engine develops a maximum power of 780 PS (60 PS more than F154) along with a peak torque of 800 Nm. The electric motors, on the other hand, churn out 220 PS of power.
The SF90, thanks to the SK Innovation cell and lithium-ion 7.9 kWh battery pack, has an all-electric operating range of 25 km, that comes from using just the motors located at the front axle. These motors allow for an all-electric operation up to 135 kmph.
The engine is paired to a redesigned 8-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox that not only offers a faster response and new gear ratios but is also 10 kg lighter and has a more compact clutch assembly. Further, it sits 15 mm lower compared to the current setup.
Inside the SF90 features, a brand unique cockpit layout that according to the company will be featuring in all their future range. Also, there is a new 16-inch curved HD digital instrument cluster, and the driver could fully control the configuration using the controls on the steering. Adding to the deal are steering wheel with a touchpad and haptic buttons, new navigation system, a head-up display, new ignition key, and full keyless technology.
The supercar has been getting a good response, even exceeds the company’s expectation, as onlookers have already ordered most of the cars at Fiorano.
