Ferrari SF90 Spider plug-in hybrid hypercar revealed

KUALA LUMPUR: Last year, Ferrari rolled out the SF90 Stradale, a two-door, plug-in hybrid hypercar, and now after a year and later, the Italian automaker introduced its droptop variant, called SF90 Spider. The new hypercar is also the Prancing Horse’s first full series production convertible hybrid with no caps on production numbers. 

The SF90 Spider’s top is made of aluminum that weighs 88 pounds less than the conventional materials, according to the company. However, the hypercar's dry weight of 3,682 pounds is still 220 more than the fixed-roof model. The retractable roof can be raised or lowered in just 14 seconds and can also be operated when the vehicle is moving at low speeds. The Spider also has an adjustable rear window, which keeps cabin turbulence at bay while the top is stowed.

Under the hood, the all-new SF90 Spider features the same heavily electrified drivetrain as the Stradale, generating a combined output of 1,000 PS and 900 Nm of peak torque. These astonishing numbers come from a combination of a twin-turbo V8 mill that produces780 PS with three electric motors churning out an additional 220 PS. The power is channeled to all four wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, enabling a 0-100 kmph sprint in 2.5 seconds and a 0-200 kmph time in 7 seconds. The top speed is rated at 340 kmph.

The interior of the drop-top trim remains the same with a large and curved 16-inch digital instrument cluster, a heads-up display, and the brand’s latest touch-sensitive controls on the dashboard and steering wheel. The automaker also offers a track-focused, lightweight Assetto Fiorano handling package with the Spider, which includes a unique livery, Multimatic spool-valve dampers, a carbon fiber rear spoiler, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 performance tyres.

For left-hand drive markets, the new SF90 Spider will be arriving in the second quarter of next year. It will carry an estimated price tag of 473,000 euros (RM 2.30 million)
