FCA plans to build EVs for Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep in Poland
KUALA LUMPUR: Currently, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’s Tychy plant in Poland builds small cars like the Fiat 500 and Lancia Ypsilon, but now the company has planned to make some more new products in the same facility. According to the reports, the automaker is spending an amount of 755 million złotys (RM 814 million) “with prospects for many times more,” for making the factory ready for hybrid and electric cars. The upgrade will let the site build three new models for Alfa Romeo, Fiat, and Jeep badges from the second half of 2022.
The company’s Europe boss, Pietro Gorlier, said in the statement that these investments are the "fulfillment of the promise to strengthen FCA's operations in Poland made two years ago during the presentation of our business plan.”
Among the said three models, the first one is rumored to be the Alfa Romeo Brennero SUV, the smallest brother of the Stelvio, and Tonale. This would be a fully electric model with specs that presumably resemble those of the Peugeot e-2008. It could be the first to inaugurate the FCA-PSA merger, which is just months away to become ‘Stellantis,’ the world’s fourth-largest automotive company.
While the other two are expected to be the next-generation Fiat 500X and Jeep Renegade. It seems that the base of these models is combined with the e-CMP platform of the compact electric Peugeots.
Although FCA is keeping all the details regarding these vehicles secret for now, it refers to them as "technologically advanced models based on a new concept of mobility using the most advanced drive systems, comprising all-electric drive” while announcing the factory investment plans.
The Tychy plant is one of FCA's largest plants located in Poland’s industrial southern region of Silesia and currently employs around 2,500 people. The plan of refurbishment comes as a boost that aligns with the company’s ambitions to rival its competitors on electric vehicle options.
