During the opening ceremony at the HMMI plant in Cikarang, West Java, yesterday (July 16, 2024), Hyundai reaffirmed its commitment to establishing a comprehensive electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem in Indonesia. The all-new Kona Electric is the first product from HMMI to utilize locally manufactured battery cells.
"Hyundai's all-new Kona Electric is the first EV in Indonesia to be produced through the entire EV value chain—from battery cells and battery packs to the final product. This is a testament to Hyundai's innovation and commitment to a sustainable future. We aim to contribute to Indonesia's economic growth and environmental health beyond vehicle production. Our commitment extends to making a positive impact on the local environment and economy," stated Sunny Kim, President of Hyundai Motor Asia Pacific.
The Kona Electric is equipped with batteries produced by PT Hyundai Energy Indonesia (HEI) and battery cells supplied by PT Hyundai LG Indonesia (HLI) Green Power. This move supports the local industry and aligns with government initiatives to reduce carbon footprints.
"Through the all-new Kona Electric, we aim to bolster Indonesia's role as a global leader in EV production and the broader automotive industry," added Sunny Kim.
The Hyundai plant in Indonesia boasts a production capacity of up to 150,000 vehicles per year, with the potential to increase to 250,000 units. This facility manufactures popular Hyundai models, including the Creta, Ioniq 5, Santa Fe, Stargazer, and the all-new Kona Electric. Additionally, HMMI serves as a key export hub, shipping vehicles to major markets across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas.
HMMI operates with a strong commitment to environmental principles, utilizing 100% renewable energy sources such as solar and hydropower. This dedication to clean energy has earned recognition from the global RE100 program.
The manufacturing process also employs Regenerative Thermal Oxidizers (RTO) to minimize pollution and reduce harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) released during production, ensuring a cleaner environment for workers and the surrounding community.
The Kona Electric will be available in Signature and Prime variants, each offering two battery options: Standard Range and Long Range. This model is the second locally-produced electrified vehicle, featuring locally-manufactured batteries following the recent inauguration of Hyundai's power supply plant.
In terms of dimensions, the new Kona Electric is larger than its predecessor, measuring 4,355 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width, and up to 1,580 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,660 mm and a ground clearance of 151 mm. The design adopts elements from the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, including pixel-style LED lights and an active air flap for optimal aerodynamics and cooling.
The interior features a digital instrument panel and a large head unit integrated into a curved frame, USB Type-C ports, a power outlet, a wireless charger, heated and cooled seats, and a steering wheel with integrated switches and gear shifters. It also includes an upgraded Hyundai Bluelink system with over-the-air updates and a 360-degree vehicle view function.
Performance-wise, the Long Range variant offers a driving range of up to 600 km, while the Standard Range will provide a range between 370 km and 500 km. The Kona Electric is also equipped with Hyundai SmartSense safety technology and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability for powering electronic devices.
All variants of the Kona Electric is equipped with a front-mounted electric motor, consistently providing a peak torque of 255 Nm. The distinction lies in their power output: Standard Range models produce 156 PS , while Long Range models generate a higher power of 217 PS.
Fransiscus Soerjopranoto, Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai Motors Indonesia, reported positive reception for the Kona Electric since its introduction and highlighted that it is the first locally-produced electric vehicle in Indonesia. With 500 pre-orders already, Hyundai aims to showcase the Kona Electric's features to all visitors at GIIAS 2024.
