Check out the first look of Maserati MC20 Convertible

KUALA LUMPUR: Maserati pulled the wraps off the all-new MC20 coupé last year and now it’s the time for its topless version. The Italian automaker has just teased the images of an early prototype of the new MC20 convertible that has exited the gates of the Modena plant. 

While the car is completely wrapped in a sky-themed camouflage, featuring a play of clouds, we can figure out a few design changes over the standard trim, which are of course focused on the front pillars, roofline, and the rear end. However, the automaker did not show the rear fascia of the car but from the top view, we can decode a new roof structure and a new panel in place of the rear windshield.

Maserati says that the upcoming MC20 Convertible “remains one of a kind, daring in every way, and designed for perfection. The body is made of carbon fibre and composite materials in its entirety, an identical solution studied for all the configurations to come: coupé, convertible and, in the future, electric.”

While the automaker has not thrown any light on the under the hood configuration, the reports suggest that it will borrow the drivetrain components from the coupe sibling. That’s a 3.0-litre  twin-turbo V6 engine delivering a maximum power output of 630 PS and a peak torque of 730 Nm. The setup enables the coupe to run from standstill to 100 kmph in 2.9 seconds before attaining a top speed of 325 kmph. However, the performance numbers of the convertible shouldn’t be the same due to the added weight of the folding roof.

Maserati will launch the MC20 convertible in 2022, which is likely to be followed by the electric coupe in the same year.
