Check out BMW’s 2021 MotoGP Safety Car fleet
KUALA LUMPUR: It was only a few days back that Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG introduced their bunch of Safety Cars for this year’s Formula 1 season. And now we have BMW doing the same for the upcoming 2021 MotoGP championship.
Since 1999, BMW with its performance M division has been the official supplier of the safety car for the MotoGP Championship. For 2021, BMW’s performance division has prepared three Safety Cars based on their latest models. Included in the list are - the M3 Sedan, M4 Coupe, and the M5 CS. Well, there is something different about this year’s MotoGP Safety Car fleet and we are happy about it. BMW M division has replaced the age-old white liveries with some special colours which definitely spice things up a lot.
Let’s get into the details, starting with the M3 Competition Sedan which as can be seen is wearing a dark grey shade, called Frozen Grey Dark Metallic. The M4 is painted yellow hue, called Sao Paulo Yellow, and the most striking of the lot is the M5 CS that is seen with a fancy dark green shade, named Frozen Deep Green Metallic.
The fleet of MotoGP Safety Cars also consists of three more cars - the M8 Competition Coupe, M8 Competition Gran Coupe, and X5 M Medical Car. Above all, there is also a BME bike included in the safety fleet, the 1000 RR. This one is the first M-branded motorcycle and as a Safety bike, it will be sprayed with white paint adorned by traditional M colours. The BMW M 1000 RR will also participate in the Superbike World Championship and the interesting part is that it’ll wear the same above-mentioned livery.
The 2021 MotoGP Championship’s first race is scheduled to take place on March 28 at the Grand Prix of Qatar, Losail. However, the fleet of BMW Safety Cars will debut on April 18 at the time of the first European race at Grande Premio de Portugal, Portimao.
Though the standard versions of the M performance cars deliver "sporty performance and perfect driving behavior up to the limits" a few revisions are still required to make them MotoGP Safety Car ready. For instance, they get a few additional elements like flashing low-mounted front light, quick-release hood latches, and emergency power shut-offs.
The M4 Competition Coupe has gotten rid of the rear seat in favor of a rollbar. It also gets a modified exhaust and a four-point harness. The M3 Competition Sedan also gets a modified exhaust with Lexus F-like exhaust.
