BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance market launch to start soon
KUALA LUMPUR: It was last year in September that BMW introduced the X5 xDrive45e iPerformance plug-in hybrid and now the automaker will launch it in markets across the globe.
Unlike the ongoing X5 xDrive40e, the upcoming version of the X5 plug-in hybrid gets an inline six-cylinder petrol powerplant instead of the good old’ four-cylinder unit.
The BMW X5 xDrive45e iPerformance is powered by a 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbo mill that churns out a maximum power of 286 PS at 5,000 to 6,000 rpm along with a peak torque of 450 Nm at 1,500 to 3,500 rpm. Taking care of the electrification aspect of the powerplant, there is an electric motor integrated into an 8-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox and poops 113 PS and 265 Nm.
With all under the hood configuration, the total system stands at 394 PS and 600 Nm. On the performance front, the latest version of the X5 plug-in hybrid can touch the 100 kmph mark in 5.6 seconds and has a top speed of 235 kmph. With the electric motor alone, the car can cap 135 kmph of top speed.
With the WLTP regulation on work, the X5 plug-in hybrid SUV has an electric-only range of about 67 to 87 kmph. The fuel consumption figure is 83 kmpl, and the CO2 emission figure rest at 27 gram per km. The combined power consumption is 28.3 - 23.1 kWh per kilometre.
The electric motor not only provides the X5 with the direct drive when running on pure electricity, but it also acts as a generator that gets its power from a 354-volt lithium-ion battery.
The battery is located at the rear between the trunk and the rear seat and has a gross energy capacity of 24 kWh. Due to this placement, the boot space is a bit compromised as 150-litre space is sacrificed. Also, the new X5 plug-in hybrid has a smaller fuel tank (69-litre) compared to the non-plug-in hybrid version (83-litre). As per the automaker, the battery can be fully charged in 6 hours and 48 minutes using a Type 2 connection and 2 3.7 kW charger.
Part of the car’s equipment list is acoustic pedestrian protection, a pre-conditioning function, electronically controlled dampers, and two-axle air suspension.
