BMW unveils next-gen user experience with iDrive 8
KUALA LUMPUR: It was in January 2021 that BMW previewed the 8th-gen iDrive system at the Consumer Electronics Show. Back then the German automaker didn’t reveal much information about the new software, but now it has revealed the system inside-out. For starters, the all-new BMW iDrive will make its debut in iX and will also feature in the upcoming i4.
Let’s get to know the all-new BMW i-Drive system in detail -
The next-gen iDrive system is a mix of software and hardware. The former includes the BMW Operating System 8 that is an improved version of the previous system. It offers an improved visual appearance with modern colours, eye-catching graphics, and futuristic forms and textures. There are three layouts to opt from - Gallery, Drive, and Focus - each with widgets as per diving situation or personal preference at hand. For instance, with Gallery, the system minimises driving information with more space for widget content, while Drive mode, the information screen displays selected information. And with Focus, the screen showcases dynamic driving situations.
Speaking of hardware, it is headlined by the BMW Curved Display. In the BMW iX, the curved panel will have two screen sections - a 14.9-inch main touchscreen and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster display. Apart from the touch displays, the system includes the familiar Touch Controller that, unlike the former unit, is dressed in a glass-effect finish, encircled by a bezel in Gold Bronze hue. On the steering wheel is a scroller for the driver to scroll through various displays.
The driver won’t be overwhelmed by the information as the system is crafted on the ‘Act, Locate and Inform’ principle that ensures clear and undisturbed display. Other noticeable improvements include -
- Button and switches in the iX reduced to half
- Climate controls now incorporated into the curved display, takes into account the number of occupants, direction & intensity of sunlight, and target temperature
- Inclusion of BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant that takes care of voice or gesture control interaction
- In-car digital assistant handles natural dialogue and users can even give it a name of their choice
- Over-the-air update ensures availability of latest features
- The My Modes feature modifies ten parameters, at the time of launch there will be three to choose from 0 Personal, Efficient, and Sport
- The driver will be welcomed by Great Entrance Moments that uses ultra-wideband radio tech to play dynamic lighting effect and soft cabin light, and carpet light
- Improved BMW Maps with AI learning
- Full integration of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
