BMW M3 Touring wagon teased, no words on its debut
KUALA LUMPUR: BMW has never come up with an M version of the 3 Series wagon. And now, when we see a teaser that shows one-third of the M3 Touring wagon, we get all excited. In the past, the closest the German automaker has ever come to making a wagon with an M badge was in 2000 with the introduction of the E46 M3 wagon prototype.
The said teaser was uploaded on the BMW M Instagram account with two words - Mic Drop, along with the usual hashtags. In the teaser, only the car’s rear profile is visible that includes an illuminating taillight (resembling that seen on the regular 3 Series), quat exhaust outlets, and a black rear diffuser. The rest of the car is covered in a dark show; however, we expect the wagon design theme to be different from the regular 3 Series and M3.
Mechanically, the M3 Touring wagon is expected to follow the foot-step of the M3 sedan and M4 coupe. The regular version will be powered by a 3.0-litre inline-six twin-turbo mill making 473 hp and 599 Nm of peak torque. In the Competition trim, we will get an updated version of the powerplant, making 503 hp of maximum power. A less powerful Pure version is also on the cards, wherein the same 3.0-litre mill will develop 460 hp with a 6-speed gearbox transmitting the power to rear wheels. As for the regular, we expect the engine to be paired to either a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic. The high-output engine, on the other hand, will only benefit from an 8-speed automatic option. Rear-wheel drive will be offered in both regular and Competition, while all-wheel drive is restricted to the latter.
Further, we expect the M3 Touring to feature the new large kidney grille seen on the 2021 4-Series and 2021 M3. There is no word about when the wagon will be unveiled; chances are it will accompany the M3 and M4 sedans that are scheduled to debut next month.
Not ours, but America is a good market for wagons, and there the M3 Touring will go against the likes of RS6 Avant.
