BMW i8 Roadster revealed at 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show

KUALA LUMPUR: One of the prominent plug-in hybrid sports cars has been recently revealed in its roadster avatar at the 2017 LA Auto Show. Yes, wraps from BMW i8 Roadster has been finally taken off, giving the i8 coupe a major update in terms of equipment and hybrid system.

The designing of the Roadster is similar to what we have witnessed in the hardtop version. At the front, i8 Roadster gets slim laser-powered headlights, signature kidney grille, and aggressive front bumper. A slight difference can be witnessed on the car’s hood which is lowered in the Roadster. The rear has a number of changes which include a ‘flying buttress’ in place of a windshield. The roadster also gets frameless gullwing doors despite being an open-top.

The composition of the panel consists mainly of CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) with an aluminum outer shell. Whereas, the windscreen frame is entirely evolved from CFRP. It is also used in making the side skirts and other components of the car to reduce the overall weight of the two-seater to a significant extent.

The hybrid system of the i8 Roadster has been upgraded with an updated version of the lithium-ion battery that is specifically designed for the car. According to the manufacturer, the capacity of the battery pack has been increased to 34 Ah from 20 Ah while the gross energy capacity has been increased to 11.6 kWh from 7.1 kWh. With the upgraded system, the Roadster is capable of delivering a maximum power output of 143 PS and can reach a top speed of 105 kmph with its electric powertrain.

Coupled to this electric system is a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder unit that delivers a maximum power output of 231 PS and peak torque of 320 Nm. The combined power of the i8 Roadster is rated at 374 PS with power being transmitted to all four wheels. Let’s see how the new model in the ‘i’ family performs in the global market.
