BMW i6 may come to fruition in 2024
KUALA LUMPUR: The luxury fastback has started getting crowded with EVs coming from the production houses of Tesla, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and others. And now, BMW, the German auto giant, has also started preparing to throw its contender in the competition. Autoblog Italia has reported that BMW's i6, a four-door coupe will follow the footsteps of the German automaker's upcoming EVs such as the i4 four-door coupe and the iX3 & iNext crossovers.
Reported to be launched in the year 2024, the BMW i6 will feature an all-wheel-drive system and come with two different powertrain options. With its major rivals being the upcoming Audi e-tron GT, Mercedes-Benz EQS, and the Porsche Taycan, the BMW i6 has to boast a potent powertrain. For just that, BMW will equip the four-door coupe EV will dual motors, one for the front and the other for the rear axle. There will be two variants of the BMW i6, with the entry-level model featuring a 150 kW and a 250 kW motor the front and rear axle, respectively.
The top-end model, on the other hand, will get a 250 kW motor for both of the front and rear axles. Speaking of the battery pack and the single charge range that the BMW i6 will offer, while a 90 kWh pack will offer a single-charge range of 560 km, a larger 120 kWh battery pack will help the occupants cover as many as 700 kilometres on a single charge. In case you're wondering, no, the BMW i6 range will not have internal-combustion-engine-powered models. Besides that, other BMW EVs like the i4 and iX3 do have internal combustion engine siblings, the 4 Series Gran Coupe and the X3.
As far as the appearance of the BMW i6 is concerned, the EV will take inspiration from the BMW i Vision Dynamics concept that was previewed at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept stood 4,800 mm long, 1,933 mm wide, and 1,387 mm tall, and saw many criticising its design philosophy. We expect BMW to revise the design language of the concept before allowing its i6 to take inspiration from the former. As we mentioned before, the BMW i6 is said to come out following the launch of the upcoming i4 four-door coupe and the iX3 & iNext crossovers. With that said, the BMW iX3 will be launched in Europe in 2020 with the i4, i1, and the iNext set to arrive in 2021.
