BMW and MyZEVA reveal key Insights on Malaysia’s EV evolution and growing adoption - The EV surge is real!
KUALA LUMPUR: In an ongoing effort to showcase the evolution of Electrified Mobility in Malaysia, BMW Group Malaysia, in collaboration with the Malaysia Zero Emission Vehicle Association (MyZEVA), has unveiled new insights through a series of detailed infographics.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
How many EVs were registered in Malaysia?
As of 2023, 13,266How many EV charging bays are there in Malaysia?
As of 2023, 2,020How much cheaper is it to run EVs compared to ICE vehicles?
According to their data, charging a BMW iX1 at home is approximately 65% more cost- effective than refuelling a BMW X1 at a petrol stationDrawing from MyZEVA’s data, these visual aids reveal significant milestones in the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and the expanding charging infrastructure, crucial to Malaysia's transition to a more sustainable transportation future.
Represented by models from the BMW i lineup, the infographics cover a range of topics, from the feasibility of interstate EV travel to a comparison of charging costs versus traditional refuelling for petrol vehicles. The information reflects the increasing practicality of EV ownership in Malaysia.
More EVs on the Road in Malaysia
If you've noticed more EVs on the road, you're not imagining it. Between 2021 and June 2024, registrations of electric vehicles surged across Peninsular Malaysia. The highest numbers were seen in Kuala Lumpur, with 5,271 registrations, and Selangor, with 1,544. Johor, Penang, Sabah, and Sarawak followed with significant numbers, while online registration accounted for the majority of new EV entries. As of June 2024, Malaysia recorded 27,382 EVs, with 17,244 of these registered online.
This rising trend signals that more Malaysians are adopting EVs, thanks to growing awareness of their benefits and the increasing range of modern electric vehicles, which now make long-distance travel easier than ever.
The Surge in Electrified Mobility
While plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) dominated the early part of the transition to electrified mobility, fully electric vehicles (EVs) have gained tremendous traction since 2022. With the continued development of EV infrastructure and rising awareness of their environmental and cost benefits, this momentum shows no sign of slowing down.
Public Charging Infrastructure is Expanding
As EV ownership rises, so does the need for public charging stations, and Malaysia has been keeping pace. There are now 2,606 public charging bays nationwide as of June 2024, according to data from MEVnet by PLANMalaysia and the Malaysian Green Technology Corporation (MGTC). While many EV owners still rely on home charging, the increasing number of public chargers is helping to ease range anxiety and support long-distance travel across the country.
EVs for Long-Distance Travel
Gone are the days when range anxiety limited EV use. Models like the BMW iX1 xDrive30 and the MINI Countryman SE ALL4 can travel up to 440 km and 433 km (WLTP) respectively on a single charge, making road trips more feasible than ever.
DC fast-charging stations, available at various locations along major highways, can recharge EVs from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes. This quick stop allows drivers to grab a snack, stretch, or catch up with family or friends before hitting the road again.
The EV Ownership Advantage
One of the key takeaways from MyZEVA’s data is the cost savings associated with EV ownership. For instance, charging a BMW iX1 at home is roughly 65% cheaper than refuelling a petrol-powered BMW X1. Home chargers, which can fully charge an EV overnight, offer not only convenience but also significant long-term savings.
Lower Maintenance, Fewer Moving Parts
EVs also require less maintenance compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. With fewer moving parts and no need for oil changes, servicing is simpler and less frequent. BMW and MINI have incorporated modular battery technology, meaning only the faulty battery modules need replacement rather than the entire battery, reducing maintenance costs even further over time.
BMW Group Malaysia’s Contributions to Electrified Mobility
To date, BMW Group Malaysia has introduced more than 6,400 fully electric BMW and MINI vehicles to Malaysian roads. Through strategic collaborations with EV charging providers, over 2,020 charging stations have been established nationwide, with more planned. More than 100 of these facilities are located at BMW i and MINI dealerships and key venues across the country, ensuring that the infrastructure supporting EV adoption continues to grow.
Malaysia is clearly accelerating toward a future powered by clean energy, and with brands like BMW leading the charge, the journey to widespread electrified mobility looks promising.
