BMW 750d to Feature a 395 hp Quad-turbo Diesel Engine

Kuala Lumpur: BMW is all set to launch the first mass-production quad-turbocharged diesel engine to swap the Munich's tri-turbo diesel mill. This engine is rumoured to make a debut with 2016 BMW 750d at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show in March along with other future 50d models as well. This quadruple turbodiesel is capable of churning out a maximum power of 395 hp, which is 5 hp less than the expected 400 hp.

Currently, the full specs of this engine are not revealed, so it is unclear whether BMW will offer four classic turbochargers or an electrically-driven turbo being added to the previous tri-turbo setup. It could be labeled as B57 TOP or B57S and would be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system. It is also being speculated that it could employ a mix of exhaust-gas driven and electric turbochargers. This would give the engine a more user-friendly powerband and would allow the conventional turbos to take over at higher rpm.

The new G11 BMW 730d is powered by a 3.0-litre turbodiesel engine which produces a maximum power of 265 PS along with a peak torque of 620 Nm. Currently, F10 BMW M550xd, BMW X5 M50d and X6 M50d feature a 3.0-litre tri-turbo engine, but after the debut of quad-turbocharged diesel engine in 2016 BMW 750d, this new engine would find a place in all those AWD models as well. Currently, the most powerful diesel engine of BMW has three turbochargers and an output of 381 PS with a commanding torque of 740 Nm, so with this new mill, you can definitely expect something better.
