A rare, timeless classic BMW 700 Coupe on display at Regas Premium Auto

KUALA LUMPUR: One of the renowned BMW dealerships in Malaysia, Regas Premium Auto, today inaugurated a new section “Regas Premium Auto Heritage” in Kuching, Sarawak by unveiling an exceptional and ultra-rare BMW 700 Coupé. The car is the legacy of Wolfgang Denzel, an automotive engineer and distributor of BMW cars in Austria. He took inspiration from the BMW 600 to design the concept with an Italian-based auto designer Giovanni Michelotti.

Gavin Tay, Dealer Principal at Regas Premium Auto Kuching said, “The BMW 700 Coupé is a timeless classic from the history of the BMW Group, and we are thrilled to be able to showcase this remarkable vehicle here at Regas Premium Auto. Interestingly, the BMW 700 Coupé features the brand’s first monocoque construction, and it helped drive BMW out from near bankruptcy in 1959. In turn, this model created a legacy in the automotive world for small, sporty premium vehicles that continues to be well-loved by many BMW enthusiasts, even after 50 years since it was last in production.”

Based on a lengthened BMW 600 chassis, the 700 coupe made its debut on June 9, 1959, in Feldafing, Munich, and attracted much fanfare around the world for maintaining the top speed and acceleration as its legendary predecessor. It was powered by a 700cc air-cooled, boxer engine generating maximum power of 32 hp with a top speed rated at 125 kmph. In its top-spec form, the numbers were 40 hp and 135 kmph. 

BMW sold over 35,000 units of the BMW 700 in 1960, which accounted for 58% of the brand’s overall sales. The vehicle remained in production for six years with total deliveries of 190,000 units by the year 1965. 

The BMW 700 was also successful in the motorsport segment, both in stock form and a racing special iteration called the 700RS.
