Bentley expands the green footprint with new Flying Spur Hybrid
KUALA LUMPUR: On its journey towards full-electrification by 2030, the luxury carmaker Bentley unveiled the new Flying Spur Hybrid yesterday. This is the second plug-in hybrid vehicle in the company’s lineup after the Bentayga and also it is the most environmentally friendly and the most efficient Bentley ever.
Under the bonnet, the luxury sedan gets a 2.9-litre V6 petrol engine and an advanced electric motor. The setup delivers a maximum power output of 544 PS and a peak torque of 750 Nm. This is 96 PS more in comparison to the Bentayga Hybrid. In terms of performance, the Flying Spur PHEV can accelerate from naught to 100 kmph in 4.3 seconds and can hit a top speed of 285 kmph.
Being the most efficient Bentley, the new Flying Spur can cover over 700 km when fully fueled. The 14.1-kWh lithium-ion battery pack on board delivers around 40 km of all-electric driving. Well, this figure is preliminary and has not been certified by the WLTP or EPA yet. About the battery charging, the automaker claims two and a half hours for a full charge, subject to the power source.
Marking the unique identity of the electrified Flying Spur are a ‘Hybrid’ badge on the front fender, a charging point positioned on the rear fender,.and quad oval-shaped tailpipes. It is offered in seven standard exterior colors that have been particularly selected to complement the character and style of the vehicle, says Bentley. However, in general, the brand’s complete range of 60 colors is on offer.
Inside, buyers will be able to choose from 15 colour themes, with numerous personalization trimming options. The car’s digital driver display and infotainment unit get some changes to show hybrid information. More connected services are also added to the vehicle that can let the buyers check the charging, and car statistics remotely. The available hybrid-specific driving modes are EV Drive, Hybrid, and Hold.
Just like non-hybrid models, the new Bentley Flying Spur Hybrid is also manufactured at the company’s home in Crewe. It is the world’s first carbon-neutral factory for luxury car manufacturing. The first deliveries of the hybrid sedan are expected to begin by the end of this year.
