Aston Martin unveils all-electric Rapide E at Shanghai Autoshow
KUALA LUMPUR: Aston Martin has revealed Rapide E at the 2019 Auto Shanghai. It is the company’s first-ever vehicle with an all-electric powertrain. It is also the first car to be assembled at the luxury car maker’s state-of-the-art St Athan production factory, which is also called the Home of Electrification centre.
“Unveiling the Rapide E will be a huge moment for Aston Martin. As our first all-electric production car, it is a truly historic step. One that signals Aston Martin is prepared for the huge challenge of an environmentally responsible and sustainable future,” said Andy Palmer, President and Group CEO of Aston Martin Lagonda.
In terms of outfit, Rapide E looks like a vehicle imported from the future. This is highlighted by the featuring of a massive honeycomb grille at the front and large air inlets that help cooling of the EV’s powertrain. Owing to the absence of any exhaust, the underfloor is crafted in line with better aerodynamics. The roofline is highly steep, and the windshields (front and rear) have narrow angular alignment. Thereafter, the wheel wells are trimmed and houses 21-inch forged aluminium wheels. The electric powertrain also contributes to the vehicle’s weight and makes it 150 kg heavier than the Rapide S.
Ingressing inside, one would be welcomed with a 10-inch digital panel that forms the instrument cluster. The dash is premium and crafted excellently for easy system management. The centre console contains a plethora of functional buttons and gauges along with a central armrest. Users can also choose among three drive modes, namely GT, Sport, and Sport+. Overall, the interior reflects the company’s legacy of making luxury and feature-rich vehicles.
Rapide E is powered by an 800-volt battery with 65 kWh capacity that powers two rear-mounted electric motors, which in turn, delivers a massive maximum power of 610 PS and an exceptional peak torque of 950 Nm. The EV can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph within just 4.2 seconds and can attain the top speed of 250 kmph. Alongside fast-charging options, the vehicle also mounts an industry-leading high-power AC inbuilt charger, which can fill the battery within three hours.
Production of this luxury EV is limited to 155 units and is available for customers to place orders. However, the pricing details are only available on application.
