ASEAN NCAP awarded a 5-star rating to the 2020 Toyota Hilux and Fortuner

KUALA LUMPUR: When it comes to safety, it is Toyota that has been consistently topping the charts with its vehicles shielded with multiple protective layers. The recent examples are the 2020 Toyota Hilux and 2020 Toyota Fortuner that received a 5-star safety rating from the New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP). The assessment team carried out the crash safety test in August and has now released the detailed results. 

Taking first on the list, the 2020 Toyota Hilux has recently made its official debut in the Malaysian market. For the stringent evaluation, the tested pickup iteration was Thai-spec 2.8L trim fitted with three airbags. The Hilux achieved an overall score of 83.42 points.

Moving to the 2020 Toyota Fortuner, the global premiere of the refreshed SUV happened in Thailand earlier this year, and it is still on the upcoming list in Malaysia. The safety scores for the new Fortuner are based on the Hilux’s crash-test assessment, as the two vehicles sit on the same platform. With a total score of 87.46 points, the SUV received a five-star ASEAN NCAP rating.

Depending on the variant, the new Toyota Hilux safety features include Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) advanced driver assistance suite (pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert), seven airbags, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, hill start assist control, downhill assist control, trailer sway control, ABS with EBD, vehicle stability control, and brake assist. 

The new Fortuner is also packed with the Toyota Safety Sense suite. Other features include seven airbags, hill-start assist control, vehicle stability control, emergency stop signal, trailer sway control, downhill assist control, and alarm system. 

There is currently no official info on the arrival of the updated Fortuner in the local market, but it is expected to land sometime soon.
