All-new Toyota Camry Hybrid arrives in Singapore; Will Malaysia be next?

KUALA LUMPUR: Globally unveiled in November last year, the all-new ninth-gen Toyota Camry has now made its way to the ASEAN region with Singapore being the first country to receive it. The new Camry is offered in a sole Elegance trim in the island state, priced at SGD 246,888 (approximately equal to RM 817,576) inclusive of COE.

The Singapore-spec 2024 Toyota Camry is equipped with a hybrid system combining a 2.5-litre naturally-aspirated inline-four petrol engine, an electric motor, and a lithium-ion battery package. The engine churns out a maximum power of 188 PS at 6,000 rpm and a peak torque of 221 Nm from 3,200 to 5,200 rpm whereas the e-motor is tuned to generate 136 PS and 208 Nm. The total system output is rated at 231 PS.

Speaking of fuel consumption, the Camry hybrid offers an impressive efficiency of 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres (19.6 kmpl), with CO2 emissions at 115 grams per kilometre. This rating places the electrified sedan in the A2 category under Singapore's current Vehicular Emissions Scheme.

Size-wise, the latest-gen Toyota Camry measures 4,920 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,455 mm in height and has a wheelbase of 2,825 mm. Compared to the predecessor, it is 35 mm longer with other dimensions remaining the same. The boot capacity of the sedan has increased by 7 litres, bringing it to 500 litres.

The upgraded sedan boasts a new hammerhead front fascia with slim LED headlights and daytime running lights. Other key exterior highlights include LED fog lamps, C-shaped LED tail lights, 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, and a panoramic sunroof. The colour palette comprises several striking choices including Platinum White Pearl Mica, Precious Metal, Silver Metallic, Attitude Black Mica, and Previous Bronze. Emotional Red 3, and Dark Blue Mica.

The interior has a simpler design with tons of comfort-enhancing bits like a 12.3-inch infotainment unit, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch instrument panel, head-up display, JBL sound system, 8-way powered front seats with ventilation function, three-zone climate control, a 360-degree camera and leather upholstery. 

As for safety, the new Camry is packed with eight airbags and advanced driver-assistance gears like autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, lane tracing assist, auto high beam, and traffic sign recognition.

Will the new Toyota Camry Hybrid come to Malaysia?

The Camry, equipped with a hybrid setup, was available in Malaysia a few years ago but was discontinued with the arrival of the eighth-generation model. It is likely to make a comeback, given its prominent presence at the Beyond Zero event alongside other Toyota electrified vehicles back in February.
