All-new 2022 Subaru Solterra EV unveiled

KUALA LUMPUR: The 2022 Subaru Solterra SUV is scheduled to make a debut at this year’s Los Angeles Auto Show. For those of you who aren’t aware, the Solterra is the brand’s first electric vehicle and is developed in collaboration with Toyota.

Platform and dimension

The new Subaru EV underpins the dedicated EV architecture called the e-Subaru Global Platform, jointly developed by Subaru and Toyota. As for dimensions, the Solterra measures -

Engine configuration

The Solterra is offered in two powertrain options - FWD and AWD. Both the options feature a 355-volt lithium-ion battery with an energy capacity of 71.4 kWh.

While the former comes with a single AC synchronous e-motor making 204 PS of power. It offers an approximate range of 530 km. The latter gets two e-motor, each making a maximum power of 109 PS, calling for a total system output of 218 PS. The range stands at 460 km.

Charging options

It includes AC charging up to 6.6 kW and DC fast charging up to 150 kW. Also, available is an option of a solar roof.

Exterior & interior features

In terms of exterior design, the new Solterra seems similar to the bZ4X, however, with a few unique touches the EV can be easily differentiated. For instance, it features an enclosed hexagonal grille with the Pleiades star cluster badge and headlamps with C-shaped DRLs. The bumper gets vertical intakes at the corner with fog lamps positioned on the lower intake.

The side profile features distinctive crease lines below the beltline and rear-wheel aft. The wheels get black body cladding with the front units extending into the front bumper. The rear showcases C-shaped signature tail lights creeping into the fenders. It also gets a large black trim piece on the rear bumper and a split tailgate.

On the inside, it gets a low-mounted, windscreen infotainment touch display, a top-mounted digital instrument cluster, giving an appearance of a modern space. The touch panel sitting below the air vents and start button houses HVAC and media controls.

 

The raised centre console fits a gear selector dial and buttons for several vehicle functions.

Sales detail

The all-new Solterra will go on sale by the middle of 2022 in several markets like the U.S, China, and Canada.
