Alfa Romeo announced new supercar badged 8C
KUALA LUMPUR: It was during the Fiat Chrysler five-year plan presentation when Alfa Romeo announced its upcoming supercar venture. Scaled to compete with the likes of Ferrari and Porsche, the new Alfa Romeo car will offer Level 2 and Level 3 autonomy.
The Italian automaker would introduce as many as seven new cars by 2020, and one of them would be the 8C coupe. The said supercar shares its name with 2007 produced 8C Competizione that was again based on the 20’s built race car. Brushing your memory a bit, in 2009 Alfa Romeo came up with a special-edition of 8C Competizione, limited to only 500 units and was priced at $300,000, i.e. around Php 15,720,600.
Here’s all that is known at the moment about the still in veil Alfa Romeo 8C supercar -
- The upcoming 8C, like the Spider and 4C, would feature a carbon fibre monocoque
- It would be powered by a midship twin-turbo engine with an electrified drive system. Combined with an all-wheel-drive system the new 8C will generate a maximum power of 709 PS
- Though the company has not revealed the top-speed, it claims the 8C will reach the 100 kmph mark in less than 3 seconds
- As far as self-driving technology is concerned, the 8C along with upcoming Alfa cars in the future will offer autonomous ability depending on the market
- Alfa Romeo has divided autonomous driving technology in two segments - Level 2 and Level 3. While the former offers partial automation (steering, acceleration and braking), the later is the packed with more advanced tech
- Specific details about the new Alfa Romeo sports car is still unknown. However, when launched, it is expected to make up to 5% of company’s global sales by 2020
Along with the return of the 8C nameplate, Alfa Romeo also confirmed the revival of the GTV (Gran Turismo Veloce) moniker in the upcoming Giulia Quadrifoglio 2+2 coupè. As can be seen in the released images, the GTV will churn out a maximum power of 600 PS and will feature a 50:50 weight distribution pattern. It will also showcase an all-wheel-drive system with torque vectoring benefits.
The new 8C and GTV are scheduled to step-in the global auto arena by 2022. Stay tuned to Zigwheels for more updates.
