After Volvo, Renault joins the 180 kmph limitation club
KUALA LUMPUR: It was last year in May when Volvo decided to electronically limit the speed of its new cars to 180 kmph. Back then the decision was welcomed with mixed reviews with most including us thinking it was all one requires when on road. Now, following Volvo's footsteps is Renault, as reported by Spiegel.de.
The French automaker is under plans to impose a 180 kmph electronic speed limiter on all its upcoming models. The company's CEO, Luca de Meo, made the said announcement during a shareholder general meeting in Paris. The explanation behind the Volvo-like move was excessive speed being the culprit behind one-third of the fatal car accidents.
That's not all, as Renault is working on a new automated speed regulation system that goes by the name Safety Coach. This new tech would be enabled to adjust the vehicle's top speed according to the law's of the nation. Apart from that, it will also take into account essential conditions like driver's attention level, sharp corners, and hazardous weather.
Furthermore, the Safety Coach system will come integrated with a navigation system. It will flag accident-prone areas on the map, thus warning the driver beforehand.
That's not all, Renault says that the system is tuned with a 'safety score' feature that judges the driver's driving skills with the help of sensors of course. Since the Safety Coach system is designed in partnership with insurers, one might even save on premiums if your safety score is good.
So, on what cars will Renault apply the 180 kmph limit? It is expected that all new cars under Renault and Dacia group will come with speed restrictions, Renault Sports model included.
However, according to a few sources, Alpine (Renault's sports car division) will be excluded from the limitation.
