During a media event held last month, the national automaker briefed its 2025 plans, announcing the launch of at least three new models this year. And, the Saga is one of them.

As we know the Proton Saga is one of the top-selling A-segment sedans in Malaysia. With its current generation model running since 2016, the anticipation is high for its next update. While the automaker remains tight-lipped about the new Saga details, spy shots and industry insights suggest that the 2025 Proton Saga will get an MC (minor change) upgrade, before the arrival of the all-new generation, based on a new AMA platform.

Before getting into the details of the upcoming Saga, let’s have a look at some previous updates in brief -

Introduced on July 9, 1985, the Proton Saga has been a symbol of affordable mobility in Malaysia. Since its launch, the automaker has sold over 2 million units of the sedan. It has gone through three generations, with upgrades in safety, design, performance, and technology, making it Malaysians' favourite car.

The ongoing third-gen model was launched on September 28, 2016, and has been given a few updates since then -

Here’s everything we know so far about the 2025 Proton Saga -

    2025 Proton Saga: Exterior

The spy shots reveal that the upcoming Saga will come with cosmetic enhancements while maintaining its compact proportions. The upgraded model is likely to receive the brand’s latest visual identity, including the “Infinite Weave” front grille and “Ethereal Bow” design. Along with the revised grille, we can also expect sleeker headlights and a more sculpted rear styling.

Reports further suggest that the hatchback version of the Proton Saga is also in the pipeline, which may be introduced a year later after the sedan's debut.

    2025 Proton Saga: Interior

While spy shots do not reveal interior design, the updated Saga is expected to gain a revamped cabin with a bigger infotainment system supporting better connectivity options. The seats may also see enhancements in terms of upholstery and comfort. Improved ergonomics and better sound insulation could be there for a more refined driving experience.

2025 Proton Saga: Engine and performance

No confirmation is yet available regarding the new Saga’s mechanical upgrades. Whether it will retain the ongoing 1.3-litre VVT engine or utilise a modernized 1.5L NA drivetrain mated to a CVT gearbox, no clarity as of now.

The fourth-generation Saga is also expected to underpin a new AMA platform, which is said to evolve the existing architecture rather than create a completely new chassis. The new underpinnings may bring better fuel efficiency and performance on board.

Further, rumours suggest that Proton is also working on an EV variant of its best-selling model. If true, this would be a bold move.

    2025 Proton Saga: Safety

As the automaker has regularly improved the sedan’s safety quotient, the 2025 Saga does not seem to be an exception. It is likely to benefit from additional airbags and advanced safety gears, offering protection to all passengers and road users.

The safety feature kit may also get upgraded with the inclusion of the advanced driver assistance bits as a windscreen-mounted camera was spotted on the test mule.

    Localized components for better efficiency

Key automotive components for the upcoming 2025 Proton Saga will be locally produced by EP Manufacturing Bhd via two strategic joint ventures - Sanly China and Jujin China.

    • Sanly China will manufacture front corner modules, subframe modules, and rear axle assemblies.
    • Jujin China will manufacture car seats for Proton.

The local collaboration will streamline the supply chain and enhance cost efficiency, making the sedan even more affordable.

    Summing up

The Proton Saga remains a compelling choice in the A-segment sedan market. With a significant facelift on its way, the car will take a step forward with cosmetic enhancements, improved features and possible technical upgrades, further wooing Malaysians with its practicality and value proposition.

Stay tuned for further updates as Proton gears up for its next big reveal!
