2025 Ford Ranger PHEV debuts with Pro Power Onboard feature
KUALA LUMPUR: Announced exactly a year ago, the Ford Ranger PHEV was recently introduced at the 2024 IAA Transportation Show in Germany. The electrified Ranger boasts the same towing, payload, and off-road capabilities as the non-PHEV models, along with the added benefit of a zero-emission driving mode.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Will the plug-in hybrid drivetrain be available for all Ranger variants?
No, the plug-in hybrid drivetrain will be offered in XLT, Sport, and Wildtrak variants, as well as a limited-edition Stormtrak model. When will the Ford Ranger PHEV launch?
The Ford Ranger PHEV will launch next year. The plug-in hybrid drivetrain comprises a 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost engine which churns out a maximum power of 102 PS. The engine is combined with an electric motor positioned in the bell housing of the gearbox. Together, the setup delivers a combined system output of 279 PS and 690 Nm, which outperforms the petrol and diesel trims of the Ranger lineup.
The transmission duties are handled by a 10-speed automatic gearbox mated to an e-4WD system. The latter comes with a dual-range transfer box and rear differential lock for better control and traction in tough conditions.
Also part of the PHEV system is an 11.8 kWh battery pack, which offers an all-electric driver of 45 km. The battery takes less than four hours to charge fully.
The Ford Ranger PHEV also features a Pro Power Onboard tech with a standard 2.3 kW or optional 6.9 kW power supply. It enables customers to run power tools and appliances via built-in outlets in the cargo bed and cabin and thus eliminates the need for generators.
Ford engineers also tweaked the suspension setup of the Ranger PHEV to handle different weight balances. The electrified pickup truck can carry a 1-tonne payload capacity and tow up to 3,500 kg just like the regular model.
In terms of design, the electrified Ranger confirms its unique identity with a few distinctive design elements. These include a unique honeycomb grille, giving the front fascia a more aggressive and stylish look. It also gets Matrix LED headlamps, a custom decal kit, and fender vents. The pickup is sprayed with a new and exclusive Chili Gray exterior paint colour.
Ford also brought on board a Flexible Rack System which allows easier transport of cargo and gear on the roof, which is especially useful for outdoor enthusiasts.
Inside, the cabin of the plug-in hybrid Ranger offers a more luxurious and refined experience compared to the standard Ranger models. It is equipped with a premium B&O sound system and a few special touches for an elevated ambience.
“The Ranger PHEV delivers the benefits of electrification together with the hard-working performance that has built Ranger a loyal customer base in Australia and New Zealand. We ensured our first PHEV pickup in Australia and New Zealand would be a hugely capable tool for work and off-roading, as well as a smart vehicle with the tech, connectivity, and EV-only capability for family life,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia and New Zealand.
The production of the 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV will be carried out at the Ford Silverton Assembly plant in South Africa. It will hit Europe, Australia, and New Zealand showrooms next year.
