2024 TAS showstopper: Lexus LBX with 300PS breaks cover - oh boy!
At the TAS 2024 show, Lexus really caught everyone's eye with their crossover, the Lexus LBX. They've taken the same engine from the GR Yaris and GR Corolla and put it into this premium version of the Yaris Cross. This thing is a beast with a G16E-GTS engine pumping out 300PS!
KEY TAKEAWAYS
Will the put the Lexus LBX Morizo into production?
Right now it's just a concept vehicle, but you never know! How much power does the LBX Morizo have?
The G16E-GTS engine unde the hood pumps out 300 horsepower!Last year, they launched the LBX, which is a bit smaller than the Lexus UX. It's got this cool Gazoo Racing Direct Automatic Transmission with 8 snappy gears for a sporty ride. And like other high-performance models, they've given it the Morizo name, which is actually the racing alias of Akio Toyoda.
Even though this G16E-GTS engine comes in a 6-speed manual variant, for TAS 2024, they're only showcasing the automatic version of the Lexus LXB Morizo. Just like the GR Yaris and Corolla, it's all-wheel drive.
They've made some neat tweaks to this Lexus LXB Morizo too, like lowering it closer to the ground, beefing up the suspension, adding 19-inch wheels, a wider body kit, and 235/45 R19 tires.
The front sticks with the McPherson strut, while the back has a double wishbone suspension, and it's got disc brakes on all wheels. To top it off, it sports this eye-catching yellow paint job, the same color used on most of Akio Toyoda's rides.
For comparison, the regular Lexus LBX usually comes with a 3-cylinder M15A-FXE hybrid engine, putting out 134 horsepower and 184Nm of torque. That one only has an e-CVT transmission and is front-wheel drive.
Right now, Lexus isn't planning to mass-produce this LBX Morizo version; it's more of a concept car to gauge public and media reaction. But man, we're really hoping they decide to put this one into production!
The Lexus LBX is a new entry in the compact SUV segment, representing Lexus' commitment to luxury and performance in a smaller package. It's built on a variation of the GA-B small car global architecture platform, which is also used for the Toyota Yaris Cross.
This shared platform underpins both vehicles, highlighting a connection between the Lexus LBX and the Yaris Cross in terms of their underlying structural design. However, the LBX has been specifically adjusted to meet Lexus' standards, offering a unique blend of dynamic performance, advanced technology, and luxury features that differentiate it from its Toyota counterpart.
The LBX stands out with its low center of gravity, wide tracks, short overhangs, and a highly rigid body, contributing to its fun-to-drive character and the Lexus Driving Signature experience. It also features a new generation of Lexus' self-charging hybrid electric system, equipped with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, and a redesigned battery for improved efficiency and performance.
Inside, the LBX showcases Lexus' focus on simplicity, elegance, and high-quality craftsmanship, with a well-designed cockpit and advanced multimedia and infotainment systems, further distinguishing it from the Yaris Cross.
In essence, while the Lexus LBX shares some foundational elements with the Yaris Cross, it elevates these with Lexus' signature luxury, performance, and technology features.
