2022 Perodua Alza vs Toyota Veloz: Differences in 10 pics

The latest version of the Perodua Alza has caused a stir in the local market with more than 30k units reserved by Malaysians so far. Well, the new Alza is not the only MPV that is gaining popularity in the country these days as its sister model, the Veloz, which will be sold under the Toyota badge is also among the highly awaited models in the country.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • What are the differences between the Perodua Alza and Toyota Veloz?

While the Perodua Alza and Toyota Veloz share the same platform and mechanical setup, the cosmetic differences and features set them apart.
  • The bookings of the Toyota Veloz are currently underway at an estimated price of RM 95k, which is almost RM 20k pricier compared to the Alza retailing between RM 62,500 and RM 75,500.

Before diving into their differences, let us first see the identical bits of these two MPVs. Both cars are manufactured by Perodua at its Rawang plant. They underpin the same Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform and mechanical setup. The latter includes a 2NR-VE 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a D-CVT gearbox sending power to the front wheels.

Included in the list of the common features are a seven-inch digital instrument display, a 9.0-inch freestanding infotainment display, an electronic parking brake with auto brake hold, and advanced driver assistance gears.

So, what makes these mechanical twins unidentical, let’s discuss with the help of images.

    Front profile

The front profile of the MPVs makes them look distinctive; the grille and bumper symbolise their respective brands. The Alza goes with a wide, bowl-shaped grille with an ‘X’ theme and an ‘L’ pattern mesh inserts whereas the Veloz features a downturned hexagonal grille with Y-pattern inserts. The latter also has T-shaped chrome accents around the LED fog lamp surrounds for a premium look.

    LED headlights and DRLs

The LED headlights of the two MPV are also different. On the Veloz, a chrome strip lying above the grille connects the headlamps integrated with sequential turn signals while on the Alza we see a different chrome bar, however, the sequential turn signals are the same. The Toyota MPV also gets LED daytime running lights as standard, which comes as optional for the Alza.

    Wheels

The Perodua Alza is equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels as standard (16-inch units for the Alza top-spec AV). The upcoming Toyota Veloz, on the other hand, rides on bigger 17-inch wheels.

    Rear Profile

The rear profiles of both SUVs aren’t significantly distinctive but carry different visual elements. The bumpers and reflector surrounds are distinctive, while the outer tail lamps are similar.

The Alza gets a retro-style script at the edge of the tailgate whereas the Veloz sports a red line connecting the tail lamps and features the Toyota badge in the centre. At the bottom, Toyota MPV also comes with an SUV-like silver section with indents resembling skid plates.

    Ground Clearance

In a recent Facebook post, UMW Toyota confirmed the ground clearance of the Veloz, which is 190 mm. It is 30 mm higher than the Alza. However, Perodua explains that 160 mm is considered the best height for a pleasant Malaysian drive in case of an MPV. It also offers an easy entry/exit for children and old-age people.

Looking at the competitors, the Mitsubishi Xpander offers a ground clearance of 205 mm in the pre-facelifted form and 225 mm in the latest version.

    Dashboard

Getting inside, here the MPVs share the same dashboard molding with apparent differences. The Veloz features a soft-touch light-grey dashboard instead of the hard plastic featuring a dark red contrast colour we find on the Alza.

    Air-conditioning system

The AC panel on the Veloz comes with an automatic function and two round knobs while the Alza’s panel has no auto climate control feature but there are digital controls and two memory positions. The Veloz will also give the facility of charging your phone wirelessly via a Qi wireless phone charger.

    Advanced connectivity

While the infotainment touchscreen display of both Alza and Veloz measures the same 9.0-inch in size, the connectivity options set them apart. With the Veloz, you get the wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The Alza, on the contrary, offers you only the wired Android Auto and that too with the only range-topping AV variant.

    Door cards

The door cards of the MPVs are also different. While the Alza’s comes with a basic pattern, the Japanese model has chunky door pulls paired with blue ambient lighting creating a premium stance.

    Colour options

The new Perodua Alza colour shades comprise - Ivory White, Glittering Silver, Elegant Black, Vintage Brown, and Garnet Red. The latter three are the new ones for 2022.

Toyota offers the Veloz in five exterior paint finishes, including two bi-tone schemes - Blue Metallic and Silver Metallic, each with a contrasting black roof. Red Metallic, Metallic Bluish Black, and Solid White are among the other options.

So, that’s all about the Perodua Alza and Toyota Veloz differences. Which of these MPVs would you like to buy? Let us know in the comments.
