2022 Mercedes-AMG SL debuts with massive changes
KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-AMG has finally pulled the wraps off the all-new SL roadster. For 2022, the iconic model gets seismic changes, including a new platform, new design, a tech-forward cabin, an all-wheel-drive system, and a fabric roof. It is no longer a Benz-branded car and will be offered exclusively under the Mercedes-AMG umbrella. It will replace the ongoing GT Roadster.
Speaking about the new platform first, the new SL is based on a new multi-material architecture made from steel, aluminum, magnesium, and composites.
Powering the 2022 Mercedes-AMG SL 55 is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that generates a maximum power output of 469 hp and a peak torque of 700 Nm. The higher-spec SL 63 is equipped with the same engine in a different tune making 577 hp and 800 Nm. The engine is coupled with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system with electromechanical clutch and variable torque distribution.
In terms of exterior design, the all-new Mercedes-AMG SL gets a new Panamericana grille, angular headlights, and a long bonnet on the front. Towards the rear, we can see sleek tail lights, quad exhausts, a heated rear window, and a tailgate-integrated rear spoiler. Highlights on the sides include pop-out electronic door handles, designer wheels, and black side mirrors.
The roadster features a convertible fabric roof that takes 15 seconds for folding or raising at speeds of up to 50 kmph.
The four-seater (2+2) cabin of the car is equipped with an AMG Performance steering wheel, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an MBUX 11.9-inch touchscreen infotainment unit, a head-up display with augmented reality, electrically adjustable AMG sports seats (AMG Performance seats available as an option), leather upholstery, an AIRSCARF neck-level heating system, and many more luxury features.
