2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata debuts with Kinematic Posture Control tech

KUALA LUMPUR: Mazda’s two-seat roadster, the MX-5 Miata, received a couple of important updates for the 2022 model year. In terms of design, the iconic sports car does look the same while changes under the skin make it an even better performer. 

The new MX-5 Miata gets a new technology called Kinematic Posture Control (KPC), which is the next step in deepening the sense of connection between the driver and car. This all-new technology developed by Mazda offers an improvement in high-g cornering precision and confidence. It manages different vehicle systems without adding a single gram of weight.

The rear suspension system of the sports car helps it plant to the ground when the brakes are applied. KPC takes this as an advantage and applies a slight brake to the inner rear wheel while high-g cornering. “This pulls down on that corner, suppressing body roll, and making steering response feel more linear through tight or rough corners,” explains Mazda.

The 2022 MX-5 Miata gets energy from the tried and tested 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine that churns out a maximum power output of 181 hp at 7,000 rpm along with a peak torque of 205 Nm at 4,000 rpm. As for the transmission, the Sport and Club models are exclusively mated to a six-speed manual unit while the Grand Touring is offered either with manual or a quick-shifting six-speed auto with steering wheel paddle shifters.

Other standard components include ABS with EBD and BA, front ventilated disc brakes, rear disc brakes with aluminum calipers, double-pinion electric power-assist steering, front and rear stabilizer bars, front double wishbone suspension, a rear multi-link suspension, and monotube dampers in the front and rear.

Beyond mechanical changes, the updated Mazda MX-5 gets a new exterior colour option i.e. Platinum Quartz Metallic. Terracotta Nappa leather seats are also added to the specifications.

The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata is set to go on sale in the US showroom this winter. The price starts at $27,300 (RM 115,116) and goes all the way up to $35,550 (RM 149,904).
