2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5: All you need to know

With an aim to redefine the electric mobility lifestyle in Malaysia, Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors has launched its all-new electric car, the IONIQ 5, earlier this morning. The EV is dubbed as the Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) and is loaded with several innovative and sustainable features.

    Take note the Hyundai IONIQ 5 is fully exempted from import and excise duties, sales tax as well as road tax as announced by the government under Budget 2022. Included in the price is a 2-year or 50,000 km manufacturer’s warranty for the car, and an 8-year/160,000 km for the battery.

    The Hyundai IONIQ 5 Lite and Plus trims are rear-wheel drive models. These are equipped with a single electric motor and a 58 kWh battery pack. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 Max, on the other hand, comes with all-wheel drive setup; two electric motors one on each axle, and a 72.6 kWh battery. All variants are mated to a single-speed transmission, with four driving modes – Eco, Normal, Sport, and Snow.

    Hyundai IONIQ 5 Charging

    The Hyundai new EV underpins the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) and supports both 400-V and 800-V charging infrastructures. It takes 6.1 hours to charge when using a standard 11 kW home AC charger. But with the help of a quicker 350 kW DC charger, you can charge it 0 to 80% only in 18 minutes. The 50-kW DC charger takes 47 minutes to accomplish the same task.

    Hyundai IONIQ 5 Exterior

    Design-wise, the new Hyundai IONIQ 5 creates a distinctive stance with a Pony-inspired profile featuring a clamshell front bonnet and a unique V-shape design front bumper. Adding to the striking appearance of the EV are pixel-inspired squared-off LED headlights with unique daytime running lights, pixelated tail lights, pop-out door handles, and aero-optimized 20-inch wheels (19-inch as standard). Also part of the kit is a solar roof.

    Dimensionally, the EV measures 4,635 mm in length, 1,890 mm in width, 1,605 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 3,000 mm. Interestingly, the wheelbase is longer than the Toyota Camry and Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan. The boot measures 527 litres and can be expandable up to 1,587 litres.

    Inside the new IONIQ 5, you get an innovative ‘Living Space’ themed interior design kitted with eco-friendly materials at many touchpoints. For instance, the surfaces of the steering wheel, dashboard, door panels are sprayed with polyurethane bio paint made up of corn and rape flowers. For the headliner, seat covers, and carpet, the automaker used raw materials extracted from sugar cane.

    The EV is also equipped with several advanced connectivity features to provide an ultimate in-car experience while ensuring optimum safety with advanced driver assistance bits. Included in the list are
