2022 Honda City Hatchback: Variants explained

Honda Malaysia launched the City Hatchback last year in December. The five-door Honda replaces the Jazz in the Southeast Asia region.

Honda launched the City Hatchback in two model types, petrol, and hybrid. However, back in December, only the petrol models were made available, and it was only a few days ago that Honda Malaysia announced the hybrid model’s price, thus making it available to the customers.

Now that we have all four Honda City Hatchback variants on offer, it’s just about right to see what each one is offering.

2022 Honda City Hatchback Variants

The City Hatchback is offered in two model types - 1.5L Petrol and 1.5 e:HEV. The petrol-powered hatch is available in three trims, S, E, and V, with the hybrid option offered in one signal RS trim.

Note the prices mentioned above are on-the-road without insurance, inclusive of the SST rebate (valid until Jun 30, 2022). Also, all variants come with a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty and five times free labour for servicing. The e:HEV also comes with an eight-year, unlimited-mileage warranty for its lithium-ion battery.

2022 Honda City Hatchback engine

All three petrol-powered variants (S, E, and V) are powered by a 1,498 cc, four-cylinder, DOHC, i-VTEC mill making a maximum power of 121 PS at 6,600 rpm along with a peak torque of 145 Nm at 4,300 rpm. The power is sent to the wheels via a CVT unit.

The 1.5 e:HEV RS variant gets the same 1.5-litre engine, however, here the mill pumps out 98 PS and 127 Nm. Also, the e-motor coupled to the engine makes 109 PS and 253 Nm of torque. The power here is transmitted to the wheels via an e-CVT unit.

Maximum speed: The 1.5 S and 1.5 E models register a top speed of 195 kmph; the 1.5 V model, on the other hand, attains 194 kmph. The lowest top speed is attained by the hybrid model at 175 kmph

0-100k sprint: All three petrol variants touch the 100 kmph mark in 10.7 seconds, for the hybrid model it’s one second less at 9.7.

Fuel consumption: For petrol variants, it’s 17.85 kmpl and for the hybrid model it’s 27.77kmpl.

2022 Honda City Hatchback braking & handling

Suspension system: All the four variants of the City hatch come with MacPherson Strut at the front and Torsion Beam at the rear

Braking system: Helping the petrol variants stop are ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The RS hybrid model, on the other hand, ventilated discs and sold discs at both ends.

For parking brake, the petrol and RS model get hand brake lever and electric parking brake at the front and rear respectively.

1.5 S & 1.5 E: These models get projection halogen headlights, LED DRLs, ORVM with turn indicators, body colour door handles, tailgate spoiler, LED rear combi lights, and shark fin antenna

1.5 V & 1.5 RS: The range-topping petrol and hybrid City hatch get LED auto headlights, LED DRLs, LED front fog lights, ORVM with turning lights, tailgate spoiler, LED tail lights, shark fin antenna, and body colour door handles

1.5 S: The base City hatch gets smart entry with push start button, ECON button, analog & digital meter cluster, manual air-con, fabric seats, ULTRA seat, multi-functional steering, power-adjustable door mirror, power-retractable door mirror, centre console with armrest, standard audio system, one USB port hands-free telephone, 4 speakers, and Bluetooth

1.5 E: Over and above the base model, the 1.5 E trim gets remote engine start, paddle shift, cruise control, single auto air-con system, 8-inch display audio system, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto support, & 2 USB port

1.5 V: This one is a slight improvement over the previous. It gets leather upholstery, and 8 speakers

1.5 RS: In addition to the standard features, the range-topping City hatch benefits form a 7-inch TFT meter, deceleration selector paddle, rear air-con vents, half leather upholstery, sport pedal pad

2022 Honda City Hatchback safety

1.5 S: The base model benefits from a lot of safety features. Part of the list are dual front SRS airbags, side airbags, driver seatbelt reminder, assistant seatbelt reminder, ISOFIX, auto door lock, vehicle stability control, ABS with EBD & BA, hill start assist, emergency stop signal, 2 reverse sensors, and security alarm with immobilizer

1.5 E: Over and above the standard model, the 1.5 E model just gets the multi-angle reverse camera that we need not say comes in very handy

1.5 V: Adding to the standard and 1.5 E list, this variant gets side curtain airbags and Honda LaneWatch Camera

1.5 RS: Exclusive to the hybrid City hatch safety spec is - auto brake hold, Honda Connect, and Honda Sensing suite of driver-assist features. The latter includes lane departure warning, road departure mitigation, lane keep assist system, forward collision warning, auto high beam, collision mitigation braking system, and adaptive cruise control
