2022 Ford Ranger: RM 108,888 priced entry-level XL variant explained

Ford’s official distributor in Malaysia, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC), launched the all-new 2022 Ranger last week and since then the local auto arena doesn’t seem to keep calm.

The Ranger nameplate has always been popular, attracted attention, and has great sales numbers for the brand. Now with the latest model and the updates, it brings along things are about to get even more interesting and crazy.

The 2022 Ford Ranger arrived in Malaysia in XL, XLT, XLT Plus, and Wildtrak form, each with their separate trims, bringing the total variants across the range to six. With so many options on the table, it is certain for a customer to get confused. And so, we have started a series wherein we’ll be discussing each of the new Ranger’s variants in detail and see what is on offer and for how much. We’ll be starting with the 2022 Ranger’s entry-level trim, the XL.

2022 Ford Ranger XL - Variants & Price

The new Ranger base XL form is offered in two variants - XL MT and XL AT, with prices starting from RM 108,888.

2022 Ford Ranger XL - Engine

The entry-level Ranger XL is powered by a 2.0-litre single turbo diesel engine with a common rail direct injection fuel supply system. The mill generates maximum power of 170 PS at 3,500 along with a peak torque of 405 Nm from 1,750-2,500 rpm. The drive is sent to the wheels via a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic with selectshift transmission, depending on the variant selected.

2022 Ford Ranger XL - Chassis & suspension

The Ranger offers amazing braking and handling ability, all thanks to its mechanical setup packed by Ford engineers. The XL comes with electric power-assisted steering (EPSA) - Rack & Pinion, that helps the driver steer with full control on those twisting and unstable terrains.

Taking care of the pickup’s smooth driving points is a double wishbone with coil spring suspension at the front and leaf spring at the rear. For its brake, the automaker has picked ventilated discs at the front and drums at the rear.

The vehicle gets a limited slip differential setup and 255/70 R16 alloys.

2022 Ford Ranger XL - Exterior

Be it the base or range-topping variant, the Ranger looks stunning and packs several amazing exterior styling and functional elements. Part of the XL model aesthetics is a black front grille, body-coloured front & rear bumper, back door & tailgate handles, rear step bumper, side steps, bedliner, and sport bar.

The functional part, on the other hand, is taken care of by halogen headlights with leveling function, front & rear fog lamps, LED tailgate mounted stop lamp, DRLs, power-adjustable side mirror, manual wiper system, six cargo box hooks point, and front recovery hooks.

2022 Ford Ranger XL - Interior

Comfort and luxury are synonymous with Ford Ranger and more so with the latest model. The latest generation pickup like its exterior showcases an equally beautiful interior with amazing features.

The XL model comes equipped with a 4-spoke urethane steering wheel with switches & tilt and telescopic adjustment, driver & front passenger one-touch up/down windows, rearview mirror, sun visor, dome light, moulded gear shift knob, 4-way manually adjustable driver seat, 4-way manually adjustable front passenger seat, rear window defogger, and 16-inch steel spare tyre.

Also, part of the kit is a lever hand parking brake, intelligent 3-blink turn signal lane charging signal, electronic dual-zone climate control air-con system, and four drive modes (Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, & Slippery).

Taking care of the connectivity is a 10.1-inch multi-touch screen display head unit with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, & voice recognition, 4 speakers, SYNC 4a, two USB charging ports, 12V socket, and an 8-inch TFT multi-information display.

2022 Ford Ranger XL - Safety

Even being a base variant, the new Ranger XL comes with loads and loads of safety features, both active and passive.

The XL passive safety kit includes driver, front passenger, curtain SRS airbags, front & rear seatbelts, seatbelt reminder for driver & front passenger, ISOFIX, remote central locking, security alarm with immobilizer, and child safety locks.

The active safety kit includes an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake-force distribution system, electronic stability control with traction control, brake assist, hill descent control, hill launch assist, rollover mitigation, and trailer sway control.

2022 Ford Ranger XL - Colour options

Unlike its siblings (XLT, XLT Plus, and Wildtrak), the XL, is offered in neutral hues. The options include Arctic White, Meteor Grey, Absolute Black, and Aluminium Metallic.

Overall, even being a base variant, the Ranger XL packs so much. However, we are yet to see what other Rangers have to offer.
