2022 Ford Ranger launched in Malaysia, here’s all you need to know about the next-gen pickup

Globally introduced last year in November, the most versatile Ranger ever has officially gone on sale in the Malaysian market. Sime Darby Auto Connexion (SDAC) offers the latest pickup in six double-cab variants for now with the mighty Ranger Raptor joining the lineup in Q4 of this year. Here’s the 2022 Ford Ranger variant-wise price list -

.2022 Ford Ranger design and dimensions 

Redesigned from the ground up, the next-gen Ranger boasts a muscular appearance with a bold-looking front end. The latter comprises a huge hexagonal grille, which is flanked by the new “C-clamp” design headlights, inspired by the brand's larger pickup, the F-150. Further elevating the pickup’s bold styling are more pronounced wheel fenders, new character lines on the sides, and new vertical tail lights at the back. Not to forget, a new ‘Ranger’ word mark is engraved on the new boot lid.

Equipment-wise, the standard XL gets halogen headlamps, 16-inch wheels wrapped in 255/70 R16 tyres, and two power sockets in the truck bed. The XLT specs sheet, on the other hand, comprises LED reflector headlamps, LED daytime running lights, and bigger 17-inch wheels shod with 255/70 R17 rubbers. 

However, the top-spec WildTrak Ranger comes with Matrix LED projector headlights for the first time along with 18-inch wheels packed with 255/65 R18 tyres. It also gets an integrated side step behind the rear tyres, offering a more accessible way into the truck bed.

Based on an updated T6.2 platform, the new Ranger is slightly bigger with a 50 mm increased track width and wheelbase.

Ford offers the new Ranger with two new exterior paints viz. Sedona Orange and Luxe Yellow, exclusive to the WildTrak. Included in the continuing options are Arctic White, Meteor Grey, Aluminium Metallic, Lightning Blue, and Absolute Black.

Under the hood, all the currently available 2022 Ford Ranger variants are powered by a 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, which comes in two forms - single and bi-turbo. However, a mighty 3.0-litre EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo petrol will be on the cards for the upcoming Ranger Raptor.

Coming back to the non-Raptor models, the XL and XLT run on a single-turbocharged unit kicking out a maximum power of 170 hp at 3,500 rpm and a peak torque of 405 Nm at 1,750-2,500 rpm. The power is sent to the wheels via a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox.

The Ford Ranger XLT Plus and WildTrak, on the contrary, are equipped with a bi-turbocharged motor which is good for making 210 hp at 3,750 rpm and 500 Nm of torque at 1,750-2,000 rpm. Here, the shifting duties are taken care of by a 10-speed automatic transmission paired with an e-Locking Rear Differential.

All the variants are equipped with the part-time 4×4 drive system with the new Ranger WildTrak also featuring selectable drive modes - Normal, Eco, Tow/Haul, Slippery, Mud/Ruts, and Sand.

Just like the exterior, the interior also gets a major overhaul. The standard kit includes a fully digital eight-inch TFT instrument panel, a portrait-style 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment screen paired with a Ford SYNC 4 system and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and a smart climate control system.

The fully-loaded WildTrak comes with a bigger 12-inch head unit, a 360-degree high-resolution surround view camera, a Qi wireless smartphone charger, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, and an electronic parking brake.
