2021 Toyota Mirai is now on sale in Japan
KUALA LUMPUR: After previewing the second-generation Toyota Mirai last year at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Japanese automaker now officially launched the redesigned fuel cell electric vehicle in the home market.
In the new form, the hydrogen-powered sedan flaunts a dynamic coupe-inspired design with better cabin space and comfort. Dimensionally, it is 85 mm longer, 70 mm wider, and 65 mm lower and has a 140 mm longer wheelbase as compared to its predecessor.
Based on Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, the 2021 Toyota Mirai gets a rear-wheel-drive chassis in place of the front-wheel-drive system fitted in the outgoing model. The new chassis gives the sedan a higher degree of body rigidity as well as greater agility and responsiveness.
The sedan equips three tanks to store the hydrogen used to power the electric motor that is one up from the old model. This has resulted in a 30 percent increase in the driving range, which is now rated at 850 km. The fuel cell stack produces a maximum power of 174 PS with a power output density of 4.4 kW/L.
Inside, the new Mirai boasts a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, an eight-inch TFT LCD digital instrument panel, a 14-speaker JBL audio system, and Qi wireless mobile charging.
Moving to the safety front, as everyone knows that Toyota and safety go hand-in-hand, the new Mirai once again reinforces this statement. It comes equipped with the latest Toyota Safety Sense suite, which incorporates an advanced Pre-Collision System with intersection collision support and steering assist, new Radar Cruise Control, and Driver Emergency Stop Assist. The hydrogen-powered car also gets Toyota Teammate Advanced Driving Assist Functions, a premise for autonomous driving.
For the standard G grade, the 2021 Toyota Mirai price in Japan starts at 7.1 million yen (RM 277,150) with a couple of equipment packages available at an extra cost. These include “A Package,” comprising Toyota Teammate Advanced Park feature, and an “Executive Package” for enhanced comfort. At the same time, the customers need to shell out 7.9 million yen (RM 308,380) for the top-end Z trim, which is also offered with an optional “Executive Package.”
