2021 Tokyo Motor Show officially CALLED-OFF
KUALA LUMPUR: Yes, it’s true guys. The 2021 Tokyo Motor Show has been officially cancelled by the organisers. The reason is pretty obvious, rising concern over the deadly coronavirus that is spreading like wildfire in several countries including Japan.
Akio Toyoda, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Chairman & President of Toyota Motor Corporation, the show has been cancelled for good. All the carmakers and participants have agreed to the decision, as it will ensure everyone’s safety and well-being
On the question of show going live via virtual means, Toyoda commented, "The Tokyo auto show showcases motorbikes, minicars, large vehicles [and> passenger cars, as well as mobility vehicles of other industries. As such, we would like to prioritise having visitors experience these vehicles in the real world, and we would rather hold the event in the real world, not virtually. So we've decided to cancel the event."
Yoshihide Suga, Japan Prime Minister is even considering declaring a ‘state of emergency’ in the country to control the transmission of the virus and its latest wave. All this doesn’t seem to reflect a good picture especially for a country that’s about to host the Olympics in three months. The fast few weeks have taken a toll on the country's medical infrastructure with over 4000 cases on an average.
In the related news, the next auto show will go through an intrinsic rebranding process, it will be called Tokyo Mobility Show. Thus following the nation’s growing alternative mobility solutions and transportation ecosystem. Will it be a hit as its previous form? Well, with the strong 67-year legacy of the Tokyo Motor Show that’s attended by millions of people annually, attraction won’t be an issue for the new version.
