2021 Mitsubishi Triton Athlete arrives in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Via a virtual event this morning, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia launched the 2021 Triton Athlete in the country. This new model in the Triton range replaces the Adventure X model. Meaning, the Triton Athlete is the new flagship model in the lineup.

As clear from the name 'Athlete' itself, the brand's new pickup is the 'embodiment of toughness refined'. It comes with an aesthetic package that is just hard to take your eyes off.

The front fascia gets a massive black Dynamic shield nose that packs in a gloss black radiator grille and gloss black under garnish. So, no more regular silver trim and chrome cheekbones for the Triton Athlete. The Thai-spec model showcases the Mitsubishi script embossed under the brand's logo. No double branding for the Malaysia-spec model.

The side, like the front follows the black theme - the door handles and side mirror caps get the gloss treatment. Further, the 18-inch wheels and the side steps are also done in black Unlike the Adventure X, the Athlete gets aero-type window deflectors.

Another highlighting bit is the dirt track-style graphics that are commonly seen in trucks these days. However, in the Triton Athlete, the graphics appear huge - it covers almost half of the vehicle and extends to the front door. 'Triton Athlete' emblazonment can be seen near the tail lamps. The right side has an Athlete badge, making its presence clear.

Coming to the cabin, the Triton flagship model features leather-wrapped steering with contrast orange stitching. The same coverage is also found on the handbrake lever and gear knob. One can also find LED illuminated scuff plates.

What powers the 2021 Mitsubishi Triton Athlete?

Under the hood configuration of the Triton Athlete remains the same as the Adventure X model. That is, it sources its energy from a 2.4-litre MIVEC turbocharged diesel engine that makes a maximum power of 181 PS and a peak torque of 430 Nm.

The power is sent to the wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. Also part of the kit is a Super Select 4WD-II system with Hill Descent Control.

As for the pickup's safety kit, it includes several active and passive features like -

• Seven airbags (front, side, curtain, driver’s knee)
• Forward Collision Mitigation (FCM)
• Blind Spot Warning with Lane Change Assist (BSW with LCA)
• Auto High Beam (AHB)
• Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
• Ultrasonic Misacceleration Mitigation System (UMS)

2021 Mitsubishi Triton Athlete price and colour options

The all-new Triton Athlete price tag reads RM 141,500 on-road without insurance. It is around RM 3,600 more than the previously available Triton Adventure X.
