2021 Maserati Grecale SUV teased, debut in spring 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: Yesterday, Maserati unveiled the long-awaited MC20 at a grand event called the 'MMXX: Time to be Audacious'. The event marks the beginning of a new era for the Italian marque. While the show's main attraction was the fantastic MC20, Maserati also took the opportunity to announce its upcoming 'sub-Levante' SUV that will be called the Grecale.
The 'Grecale' moniker is in line with the brand's history of naming its models after the world's most famous winds, which started in 1963 with iconic Mistral and followed by Ghibli, Bora, Merak, Khamsin, and Levante. Maserati Grecale is named after the violent north-east wind of the Mediterranean Sea. It will slot beneath the bigger Levante in the brand's lineup and will lock horns against the Porsche Macan and BMW X3.
The all-new Grecale will borrow the 'Giorgio' platform from the Alfa Romeo Stelvio and will be built at the same Cassino plant in Italy, where Alfa assembles its SUV. Under the hood, it will feature the same twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 'Nettuno' powertrain that recently made its debut with the MC20 supercar, although in a different state of tune. The engine is likely to be paired with an eight-speed automatic and an all-wheel-drive system fitted in the Stelvio. Maserati is also planning to bring a pure electric version of Scala, just like the supercar,
"Destined to play a leading role for the brand," the new Grecale is slated to enter production next year, following a global premiere set to take place in spring 2021.
Other than this, the Italian automaker also teased an all-new version of the GranTurismo at the same event, the model which completely left the market in November last year. The teaser previews a simple silhouette of the 2021 GranTurismo, which unfortunately does not tell us much about it, other than how it could look.
Maserati has the plan to launch 13 new models by the end of 2024 that might include a convertible version of the MC20 supercar.
