2021 Hyundai i20 N supermini debuts with a hot makeover
KUALA LUMPUR: Hyundai unveiled the new Hyundai i20 N Line back in September that gets several performance-inspired add-ons. Now, the supermini is making the headlines once again, this time the automaker introduced the all-new i20 N based on the hatchback’s latest generation. The new hot hatch will challenge the likes of the Volkswagen Polo GTI and Ford Fiesta ST.
The official images of the Hyundai i20 N reveal that it has adopted much of the styling cues from the N-Line, but features red accents on the lip spoiler, side skirt, and rear skirt. Donned in the “Performance Blue" shade, the i20 N flaunts an additional air intake on the front bumper and a distinct grille with an N logo. It stands on 18-inch aluminum rims with a heavy roof spoiler looking quite striking. The modified rear lights, a rear bumper with a diffuser, and triangular rear fog light complete the look of this supermini. Other exterior colours are Polar White, Sleek Silver, Aurora Grey, Brass, and Phantom Black.
As disclosed earlier, the new i20 N is hauled by a turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder mill generating 150 kW of maximum power and 275 Nm of peak torque. The engine is paired to a six-speed manual transmission and a mechanical limited-slip front differential.
In contrast, the VW Polo GTI powered by a 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder boasts an output of 147 kW and 320 Nm, and the Ford Fiesta ST with a 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine has an output of 147 kW and 290 Nm.
The Korean automaker claims that the i20 N weighs just 1,190 kg, the same as its WRC sibling, which enables it to run 0-100 kmph in 6.8 seconds before reaching a top speed of 143 mph. It has five driving modes - Normal, Eco, Sport, N, and N Custom, which adjust the parameters of the engine response, exhaust noise, and steering feel accordingly.
Chassis tweaks over the standard i20 include new springs and dampers, uprated brakes that are 40 mm larger, increased front camber, and retuned electronic power steering.
Inside, the Hyundai i20 N is largely unchanged over the standard model, although it gets a pair of sports seats, a sports steering wheel, unique instrument cluster graphics, aluminium pedals, and a special gear knob.
The new Hyundai i20 N is likely to go on sale in early 2021 in Europe.
