2020 Honda City - Safety explained

2020 Honda City - Safety explained

After having a brilliant and long career in the Malaysian market, the 4th-generation Honda City would soon be relieved off of its duties and the new 2020 Honda City will be stepping in and taking on the responsibilities. It was late last year when Honda revealed the new City in Thailand which garnered a lot of attention.

The 2020 Honda City, 5th-generation of the car, has been given a thorough overhaul to keep up with the changing times and demands. And we must say, Honda has done quite a fantastic job. The list of new features of the 2020 City is pretty long and some of its key features are-

  • New design
  • LED headlights (Civic-like)
  • U-shaped signature on rear lights
  • Dual-tone alloy wheels
  • Spacious cabin
  • Revised interior
  • New 1.0-litre turbocharged engine with 122 bhp, 173 Nm
  • Honda connect telematics system

However, in this story, our primary area of concern will be safety. If you want to have detailed information about other 2020 Honda City specs, you can read our ‘2020 Honda City: All you need to know’ article. So, let’s jump right into it then, shall we?

Airbags

These are, perhaps, one of the most basic and effective safety features that most of the cars come with. However, the catch here is, how many airbags are there, because a car’s safety rating can vary significantly based on the number of airbags it has. If we talk about the 2020 City, thankfully, it comes with a total of 6 airbags - driver, front passenger, side, and curtain. Six is a healthy number and thus, the City has a safe cabin.

ABS with EBD and BA

Anti-lock Braking System is a great safety feature to have as it prevents the wheels from skidding under heavy or panic braking. It could also reduce the stopping distance to some extent. It is super beneficial in wet road conditions and allows to steer the car during emergency braking. Nowadays, ABS is usually combined with EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution) and BA (Brake Assist). All of them work together to improve a car’s braking performance. 2020 Honda City comes equipped with all three of them.

Multi-angle Reverse Camera

Reverse cameras are like eyes behind your head. They are present to help you reverse or park your car safely. The new 2020 City comes with a Multi-angle Reverse Camera. It can display the camera’s feed from 3 different angles to assist in the best possible way.

Vehicle Stability Assist

The new City definitely looks sportier than its predecessor which might provoke you to drive a bit enthusiastically. It is for times like these when the Vehicle Stability Assist has your back by preventing or reducing under and oversteer, especially when you are trying to tackle corners at speeds more than usual.

G-CON

This is a G-Force Control Technology which creates a body frame that absorbs impacts to minimise injuries to passengers during a collision. It isn’t something that you can switch on or off. It’s just there.

Some of the other key 2020 Honda City safety features are-

  • Hill Start Assist - helps to prevent the car from rolling backwards when the brakes are released on an incline.
  • Emergency Stop Signal - sudden braking activates the flashing of hazard lights as a warning to other drivers.
  • ISOFIX - safely install child car seats with this feature.
  • 3-point ELR seat belts - seat belt pre-tensioner prevents forward motion while load limiters reduce pressure on the chest.

So these were the key safety features of the 2020 Honda City. While we don’t deny that Honda has worked upon the new City to make it that much more appealing to the masses, we also can’t ignore the fact that it didn’t work as much as it should have in improving the car’s overall safety. All of the aforementioned safety features that we just talked about can be found in the current City. This is a bit disappointing because the City is an important car for Honda and Honda had a great opportunity to make it better than the competition in every aspect.

Anyway, what’s done is done. As of now, Malaysians are still admiring the previous-generation City. Let’s see when would Honda bring in the new one. As for the pricing, expect a healthy hike because of the inclusion of new features and the more powerful turbocharged engine. We have our eyes and ears open and will let you guys know about any of the latest findings of the 2020 Honda City, so stay tuned to Zigwheels Malaysia.
