2020 Ford Ranger FX4: First impression

Based on the Ranger XLT, Ford Ranger FX4 is an uncompromised truck for adventure seekers having a rugged and thrill-seeking lifestyle. To make things more exciting and appealing, Malaysia now gets the 2020 Ford Ranger FX4. The new iteration brings a host of fresh and unique features that are apparent at first glance. It is a perfect blend of city living and off-the-grid adventures over tough terrain on weekends.

Amid the current COVID-19 situation, the new Ford Ranger FX4 was launched today via Facebook and YouTube Live through a product walkaround session. With this, it has become the first pick-up truck in Malaysia to be launched simultaneously on both platforms.

To celebrate the launch, Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) has announced that the first 150 customers who buy the new FX4 will get free accessories worth RM 5,398. These include an in-built digital video recorder with an 8GB memory card and exterior accessories comprising an executive tinting and a matte black sports bar. Here is our first impression of the brand-new Ranger FX4:

Head-turning exteriors 

On the front, the pick-up has a distinctive mesh-grille design with ebony black finishing, black front, and rear bumpers, as well as glossy black side mirror covers. The handles of doors and tailgate also have the same finishing. On the sides, there are 18-inch gloss black rims covered in all-terrain tyres, and striking bold ‘FX4’ decal, which distinguishes the model against the other Ranger variants. Moreover, a 3D Ranger badge is also positioned on the tailgate. The pick-up is available in three color options - Meteor Grey, Absolute Black, and Arctic White. 

Plush interiors

As for the inside of the new FX4, its strong identity continues with the leather-accented seats with the FX4 logos embossed on the seatbacks. The contrasting red stitching is given to the centre console, instrument panel, gear selector, door trims, handbrake, and as well as to the steering wheel. It also features the special FX4-branded carpet mats, which further enhance the plusher look of the pick-up. 

Powerful engine

Under the skin, the FX4 houses the proven Duratorq 2.2L turbo-diesel engine capable of generating 160 PS of maximum power at 3,200 rpm and 385 Nm of peak torque from 1,600 to 2,600 rpm. It is coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, with a four-wheel-drive system along with on-the-fly shifting.

Smart and safe

The new Ranger FX4 is loaded with several smart technologies and safety features. These consist of:

• 8-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system with reversing camera 
• Electronic shift-on-the-fly 4x4
• Rain-sensing wipers
• Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS)

Other safety appointments include two airbags, limited-slip differential, hill launch assist, hill descent control, anti-lock braking system with emergency brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution, electronic stability control with traction control, ISOFIX child seat mounts, rollover mitigation, adaptive load control, and trailer sway control.

Price

The 2020 Ford Ranger FX4 price starts at RM 126,888 (on-the-road, without insurance). It comes with a manufacturer’s warranty of three years or up to 100,000km, whichever is earlier. 

Keeping in mind the criticality of the global health crisis, the automaker has introduced the Ford Digital Salespersons. The interested customers can contact them at +6019-204 1200 from 9 am – 4 pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays. Through this, customers will be linked with an authorized Ford salesperson at the nearest dealership.

So, that was our first impression of the new Ford Ranger FX4. We must say that we are quite impressed by it. Ford’s idea of bringing a truck with a lot more attitude and distinctive features will really be going to add more fans to the list of Ranger’s popularity. As a part of nine variants lineup, FX4 reinforces the Ranger’s versatility as a vehicle to suit every lifestyle.
