2020 BMW X5 and X7 to feature N63 4.4L V8 engine
KUALA LUMPUR: Well, the heading gives it all away. Both the 2020 BMW X5 and X7 are prepared for a hot new mill that’s taken straight from the M850i bay. Once on sale, i.e., from September, the two M50i badged SUVs specs sheet will feature an N63B44T3 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 petrol mill. This powerful engine block will churn out a maximum power of 523 hp from 5,500 to 6000 rpm along with a peak torque of 750 Nm from 1,800 to 4600 rpm.
As for the existing XDrive50i, it also houses a 4.4-litre turbo V8 mill, and the performance figures their read 456 hp of power from 5250 to 6000 rpm and 650 Nm of torque from 1500 to 4750 rpm. Thus, making the upcoming M50i around 67 hp and 100 Nm powerful. These figures allow the new X5 to cross the 100 kmph mark in 4.1 seconds. Also, its top speed is electronically limited at 250 kmph. All the generated power is sent down to the wheels via 8-speed Sport Steptronic gearbox that comes with revised control logic leading to improved efficiency and performance.
The engine is made from aluminium alloy, and the cylinder walls are given iron coating that helps reduce friction. The piston rings are now optimised, and the pistons are coated with Gafal to endure the crank drive stress that’s created due to extra power and torque. Further, a viscous damper on the crankshaft help minimises the torsional vibration, thus enhancing engine smoothness.
Talking about the new 8-cylinder M Performance, it also features several improvements like High Precision Injection, use of two twin-scroll turbochargers, Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing, and Valvetronic fully variable valve control. Both the SUVs are the same in terms of gear ratios and the xDrive all-wheel drive, sporty-sounding M Sport exhaust system and paddle shifters with Launch Control function are standard offerings.
